23 DAYS FROM £2745
From its vast expanse of water-based agricultural lands overlooked by the awesome Hoang Lien mountains in the north, to the sinuous coast-hugging length of the country as its scimitar shape cuts through the South China Seas into the Gulf of Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia are defined by rivers, ponds and a life lived on and with water - literally the lifeblood of these countries. At the same time, the Central Highlands dividing the two great deltas of the Red River and the tropical south's Mekong make for dramatic differences. 'Contrast' is an often over-used word in travel descriptions but it certainly applies when comparing Hanoi and its mix of stately French colonial buildings, pagodas and Asian architecture, Ho Chi Minh City, known as the Paris of the East and the Khmer's greatest monument at Angkor, Cambodia. Vietnam and Cambodia deserve to be visited for their world of sampans, lotus ponds, fine textiles, coolie hats and still surviving forests of hardwood, the fragrant frangipani and the extravagantly decorated architectural masterpieces. This holiday brings you a taste of the old Asia and it does it with the thoroughness and style that Titan clients have come to expect.

DAY 3
HANOI
Ho Chi Minh's achievements in liberating Vietnam, first from the French and then from the Americans, has assured him, his place in world as well as Vietnamese history. The stilted house, his simple residence, stands in a peaceful lakeside setting, where we have a view of the interior from an outer staircase and as we walk back through the park we see the famous 12th century one-pillar pagoda. We continue our exploration of the capital, taking in the Temple of Literature, dedicated to Confucius, and tread the paths once reserved for the Emperor and his mandarins. We conclude our tour with a visit to the Fine Art and Ethnic Museum. After lunch the afternoon is at leisure and this evening we have arranged a visit to the theatre for a water-puppet show. The puppets can be over a metre high, carved from sung wood, and are dexterously manoeuvred by skilled puppeteers standing up to their waists in water! We return to the hotel and the rest of the evening is at leisure.
DAY 4
HANOI · HALONG BAY · HANOI
248
Leaving the capital this morning our journey takes us through some captivating countryside, from sturdy water buffalo lethargically pulling ploughs to lush green rice paddies and native villages. We arrive in Halong Bay, whose rugged limestone islands, rising pinnacle-like out of the South China Sea and numbering over 3,000, are one of the great natural sights in the world. Our lunch cruise this afternoon around jagged cliffs, caverns and grottoes promises an unforgettable experience. We return to Hanoi this evening.
