the day we stop at Grassmere Farm, a renowned holiday home and former British plantation bungalow, dating back to 1954. In the spice gardens, we find oriental-style markets stocked with flowers and fruit, together with handicraft centres. As we approach Kandy, spectacular views of the city nestling amidst low hills can be seen, a city looped by Sri Lanka's longest river, the Mahaweli. We check into our hotel for the next two nights, the Mahaweli Reach, before being enthralled by the agility and grace of the Kandyan dancers. The city has its share of hallowed and living shrines of the Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims living in the city. We witness the rituals which are enacted daily in the Temple of the Sacred Tooth accompanied by flute playing and drumming. Dinner will be at our hotel this evening. INDIA ANURADHAPURA HABARANA POLONNARUWA SIGIRIYA DAMBULLA KANDY NUWARA ELIYA COLOMBO BENTOTA SRI LANKA DAY 8 KANDY · PINNAWELA · KANDY The Elephant Sanctuary at Pinnawela is where we head today. Here you can see, at close proximity, how these orphaned and injured wild animals are lovingly cared for as they roam freely in the surrounds of their sanctuary before being released back into their natural environment. Our lunchtime riverside venue is across the road from the orphanage and as we follow the herd we can watch these captivating mammals enjoying their twice daily bathing routine. Later in the day we return to our hotel for dinner. HOLIDAY ADDITION Enjoy our specially arranged Holiday Addition at the end of your holiday. AVAILABLE FOR THIS TOUR: Bentota DAY 9 KANDY · NUWARA ELIYA 3 nights Prices start from £225 All aboard at Peradeniya early this morning as we experience a short train journey winding and weaving through terraced paddy fields, lush valleys and remote villages before arriving at Nawalapitya. Here we reboard our coach and continue to the 'capital of the hill country', Nuwara Eliya situated 6,000 feet above sea level, nestling at the foot of Mount Piduruthalagala, the country's highest peak. Here the pure air distilled by forestation provides a purity that prompted the British in the 1820's to build a military sanatorium. The British influence is still visible with Victorian and Tudor style homes edging the pretty blue lake. The Grand Hotel is our base for the next two nights and where we have dinner this evening.
