VENICE BOLOGNA MONTECATINI TERME LUCCA PISA SAN GIMIGNANO DAY 5 SAN GIMIGNANO · SIENA COLLODI FLORENCE POPPI AREZZO SIENA Adriatic Sea To San Gimignano which stands on a hilltop surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. As we enter the town and climb to the main square it is as though we have returned to the 12th century. We depart late morning for Siena, the second city of Tuscany. Old houses and palaces still line the narrow winding streets of the city. We leave you free to explore this city that never fails to create a picture, in the mind of the visitor, of life in medieval times. ELBA TO ROME OR BOLOGNA ITALY ROME DAY 9 ELBA DAY 6 AREZZO · POPPI · CHIANTI COUNTRY After breakfast we travel through the Arno Valley to the ancient city of Arezzo, crowning a small hill which rises out of the fertile plain where three valleys meet. The beautiful fan shaped Piazza Grande is surrounded by medieval and Renaissance palaces together with galleries designed by Vasari and from here you can enter both the cathedral and the remarkable Romanesque church of Santa Maria della Piave, with its belfry of 100 holes resembling a giant dovecoat. Our journey now takes us through the Cassentino valley with its high mountains, in places barely leaving room for the river and the road and the thick forest of fir, beech and chestnut. The view broadens into rich agricultural plains as we approach Poppi, dominated by its perfectly preserved castle. This proud and attractive town is the former capital of Cassentino and commands fine views over the Arno valley. This afternoon we travel through Chianti country for a visit to a local winery where we enjoy a tour and tasting before returning to our hotel for evening dinner. After a leisurely breakfast we take a scenic drive of this beautiful island, with its small inland villages and idyllic beaches.
