banister carved with foliated scrollwork and imaginary scenes, including a bullfight. In these environs and the city as a whole, there is a wonderful feeling of timelessness and peace - a place to relax and browse, with all the comfort, aesthetic and practical that money can buy. Here, you may feel, civilisation has finally triumphed. The cafés and restaurants, catering for the pockets of poor students as well as wealthy visitors are quite wonderful. After a guided tour this morning we leave you free to enjoy as you will. SANTANDER SANTILLANA DEL MAR BURGOS SAN SEBASTIAN PAMPLONA ZARAGOZA BARCELONA SPAIN SALAMANCA AVILA SEGOVIA EL ESCORIAL MADRID TOLEDO Balearic Sea DAY 6 SALAMANCA · BURGOS offer high fashion. In the centre of the warren of narrow lanes that make up the medieval quarter is the old cathedral. This delightful area has tapas bars in profusion, where you can take a drink and sample the local tapas (varieties of munchables rather like hors d'ouvres). Here is to be found the Los Carcoles (`the snail') restaurant, whose walls are covered with photographs of famous customers, including Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and most leading post-war statesmen. You enter through the kitchens, an arrangement traditional in Spain. Architecture in Barcelona is dominated by the inspired fantasist Antonio Gaudi and his oddly shaped multibalconied structures, with their barley-sugar columns looking like illustrations from a children's book or a Walt Disney® animation, are unmissable. OR EXTEND YOUR STAY - CALL FOR DETAILS North over the Duero to Valladolid, also a university city and rich in decorated buildings, such as the exquisite cloistered patio of San Gregorio College, a stonework fantasy that invites the imagination to take off. Burgos, our next stopping place, lies in a shallow valley at the centre of a 3,000 feet high plateau. The slender, openwork cathedral spires rise high to greet us and the river Arlanzon's meandering course through the city, irrigates lush gardens lined with avenues - a delicious place in which to stroll. This evening our hotel is the Almirante Bonifaz. DAY 7 BURGOS · SAN SEBASTIAN Heading for the Cantabrian coast this morning, we come to the village of Santillana del Mar, unspoiled and highly evocative of long ago when its monastery was a place of pilgrimage and the great Castilian families built their fine mansions. Today the farmers still drive their cattle through the main street to age-old stables and cow byres. Nearby Santander occupies a beautiful site along the north shore of a great bay. With its excellent facilities, theatres and restaurants it has become one of the most sophisticated of the resorts extending eastward along the glorious Cantabrian and Basque coastlines into France and Biarritz. We take the coastal road this afternoon to arrive at the French resort's great rival for old-style elegance, San Sebastian, with its lovely sweeping promenade. The scallop-shaped bay has been known for centuries as `the Pearl of the Cantabrian Coast'. Our hotel for the next two nights is the Amara Plaza and where we have `Pintxos' a speciality of San Sebastian. Informal Madrid nightlife Sagrada Familia - Barcelona Our hotel is located within walking distance of the golden sands of Playa de la Concha beach and the colourful fishing quarter. The River Urumea flows through the city under a series of picturesque bridges and today we leave you free to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this delightful city. A funicular ride to the summit of Monte Igueldo offers panoramic views and even though many of its ancient monuments have been razed to the ground, the spacious tree-lined avenues, elegant buildings and gastronomic specialities make this a gem of a resort. DAY 9 SAN SEBASTIAN · ZARAGOZA Navarre's capital Pamplona, our first stop this morning, is known the world over for the `running of the bulls' memorably described by Ernest Hemingway in his first and perhaps greatest novel `Fiesta'. We continue to the Rioja Navarra wine growing region and an opportunity for wine-tasting in the medieval city of Olite. Later in the day we continue to Zaragoza for our overnight stay at the Hotel Melia Zaragoza. DAY 10 ZARAGOZA · BARCELONA Today after an early breakfast we follow the course of the Ebro, then head east to Aragon across the brilliant scenery varied in colour and relief, to Barcelona. We check into the Tryp Apolo Hotel, our base for the next two nights and where we have dinner this evening.
