DAY 2
BERLIN
After breakfast we commence our guided orientation tour passing well known sights such as the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, built between 1891 and 1895 as a memorial to the Emperor Wilhelm I. The neo-Renaissance style Reichstag building housed the first session of the new Diet of the Empire in 1894 and, almost one hundred years later, hosted the inaugural session of the Parliament of a reunified Germany. The German and French cathedrals dominate one of Berlin's most beautiful squares, the Gendarmenmarket, named after King Sergeant Friedrich Wilhelm's "Gens d'Armes". Also not to be missed is the famous Brandenburg Gate, for so many years a symbol of a divided city. Afternoon at leisure to shop along fashionable Kurfurstendamm and Tauentzienstrasse.
Sanssouci Palace, Potsdam
After breakfast we take the short drive to Potsdam associated with Frederick the Great who chose Potsdam as his seat of government. After all, could there be a finer setting for the Baroque palaces and gardens of Sanssouci than amidst this superb lakeland scenery? Interestingly, the Cecilienhof Palace, where the celebrated Treaty of Potsdam was signed in 1945, is in the style of an English country home. We pass through the exclusive suburb of Neubabelsberg and the quarters used by Churchill, Stalin and Truman while attending the Conference. We return to our hotel, with the remainder of the day at leisure.
DAY 4
BERLIN · LEIPZIG · COLDITZ · DRESDEN
After breakfast we leave for Leipzig, a city standing at the confluence of the Weisse Elster and Pleisse rivers and at the crossroads of two great trading routes. It has held a charter since 1165 to hold markets and was, until the mid 1930's, one of Germany's leading industrial and cultural centres. On arrival we commence our orientation tour passing St Thomas Church, the burial place of Johann Sebastian Bach who was their choirmaster for over a quarter of a century. This afternoon we visit Colditz Castle, built on rocks high above the town and overlooking the valley of the River Mulde. Without doubt this was the most notorious of all prisoner of war camps and was the inspiration for the film "The Colditz Story". We continue to Dresden and our hotel where evening dinner is included.
DAY 5
DRESDEN · NUREMBERG
332
This morning we take an orientation tour of the city. Dresden, originally a Slav town, was Germanised in the 12th century. The strong Italian influence in the architectural style of many of the churches and villas has given the townscape an international flair and has become affectionately known as "The Florence of the Elbe". Although much of the city was destroyed in 1945, many of Dresden's historical buildings have been restored, in particular the miraculous reconstruction of the Zwinger and the church of our lady. This afternoon we make the drive to our hotel in Nuremberg, the Holiday Inn or the Maritim Hotel, our base for the next two nights, with evening dinner included on night of arrival.
