The USA contains many wonders, but there is no disputing that the South boasts some of the world's most exotic locations. New Orleans, Georgia, the Carolinas and Texas - the names conjure powerful images, but the reality has a colour and vibrance that no film can match. Then there is lovely old-world Virginia, and Washington which, in the French-style generosity of its planning, the human scale of its Georgetown houses and the outlook of its people, is in tune with what is far and away the most comprehensive tour of these regions. Among the many included highlights are entrances to Colonial Williamsburg, the original Jamestown Settlement and glorious Magnolia Gardens on the outskirts of Charleston. DAY 1 LONDON · WASHINGTON
and Space Museum, with its stunning exhibits, ranging from the Wright brothers first plane to the rocket capsule from which the moon was first explored. The atrium-style cafeteria provides an excellent light lunch, but the queues of the peak period are best avoided. You have the afternoon free to further explore the complex of buildings that makes up the Smithsonian Institute, and a stroll away is one of the world's great picture galleries, as oasis of tranquillity. This evening, after time to rest and freshen up at our hotel, we travel to fashionable Georgetown, where life is as lively at midnight as at midday. On return we embark on our `Washington by Night' tour of the city's celebrated illuminated monuments and buildings, and drive past the White House and along the Stately Mall.

The graciously laid-out Mall, stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capital Building, with its gardens running down the centre, is surrounded by nearly all the city's great buildings.
