THE SEASONS AND THE SCENERY
The different climates, environments and landscapes of the USA reflect perfectly the individual beauty of the seasons. The fall colours of New England take their share of the plaudits, as the trees undergo their magical yearly change from green to vibrant reds, oranges and golds. But no less impressive are the fragrant cherry blossoms, magnolias and azaleas of the southern states in spring. Summer is an iconic time of year in America's so-called `Golden West' and that season presents an enchanting picture of the Rockies - lush forests, fast-flowing streams and crystal lakes reflecting dramatic peaks and clear blue skies. And the wonderful year-round climate of California, Nevada, Arizona and Florida offers an enticing opportunity to travel `out of season', enjoying winter sunshine and the numerous attractions of these great states without the tourist crowds. First time visitors to the USA are often struck by the sense of space. This is a continent of big views and awe-inspiring sights, where natural wonders abound. As well as the seasonal scenic highlights mentioned above, you may choose to explore renowned national parks such as Yellowstone, Yosemite and Bryce, with their thunderous geysers, plunging gorges and intricate rock formations, marvel at the scale of Ol' Man River Mississippi or contemplate the echoing vastness of the Grand Canyon.
THE HISTORY
Sites the length and breadth of the country reveal the fascinating history of the USA, including Native American ruins that pre-date the arrival of Columbus, the Floridian city of St Augustine, established by Spanish settlers in 1565, Plymouth Rock and Jamestown, founded by the Pilgrim Fathers. To visit the battlefields of the War of Independence and the American Civil War and to explore the monuments and museums of Washington DC is to understand the liberty and character of modern-day America, but countless reminders of its past, from `New England' to the elegant antebellum mansions of the Deep South add an extra, enthralling insight into the historical journey that the country has undertaken.
