Day 7 Amarillo This morning we visit the fascinating Panhandle Plains Museum that depicts the history of the northwest from 400 million years ago through to the mid 20th century. Its exhibits range from geology, the culture of the local Indians, ranching and the history of the petroleum, oil and gas industries. The museum also holds a reconstruction of a pioneer town, which was re-created using original log cabins as well as an extensive collection of western artefacts. After lunch we continue to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second largest canyon in the United States and have time to view the extraordinary vistas of colour and beauty. Later we return to Amarillo for some free time to explore. It enjoys a pleasant climate, located in the shadows of the majestic Sandia Mountains and prides itself on the warmth of the welcome it gives to visitors. We take a brief orientation tour before checking into our hotel, The Best Western Rio Grande, conveniently located close to the Old Town area. Day 9 Albuquerque fact, you may catch a glimpse of a silvery streak which is the mighty Colorado River. Later in the day we return to our hotel at Flagstaff. Day 12 Flagstaff - Scottsdale WH AT IS I NCL UDED · 13 nights in hotels and 1 in flight (accommodation as specified or similar) This morning we travel south and pass through Oak Creek Canyon and view the craggy peaks of red sandstone before arriving in the artist colony of Sedona set amid rugged countryside. Continuing south we arrive at Scottsdale, nestled between the Arizona desert and mountains. Our hotel for the next two nights is the Hyatt Place Hotel. Day 10 Albuquerque - Flagstaff Travelling west into Arizona today we visit the Petrified Forest National Park. Here the remains of an ancient forest lies scattered across northeastern Arizona. Fossils of tall trees, large reptiles and early dinosaurs provide clues to life 225 million years ago. The Park incorporates a section of the massive Painted Desert, a vast expanse of badland hills, flat-topped mesas and towering buttes. Here a rainbow of colourful rock layers is exposed in this austere landscape. We continue west to Flagstaff, at the base of Mount Humphreys and nestled among the largest stand of ponderosa pines in the United States. Our hotel is the Courtyard by Marriott. Day 11 Grand Canyon A day to relax and enjoy the superb climate and dazzling surroundings of Scottsdale, known as "The Valley of the Sun". A golfer's paradise, this wealthy city offers a range of sporting and cultural activities, including galleries of the worlds great art and a dazzling array of fine shops in plazas. Today, the canal system which was created more than a thousand years ago by Hohokam Indians winds through the city - a reminder of the centuries past where Spanish, Mexican and Anglo-American cultures joined to produce a unique blend. Many optional excursions are available (bookable at your hotel) to further explore a land where towering Saguaro Cacti overlook the pristine mountain foothills and cottonwood trees and lush flowers dot the terrain.
