Suggested Itineraries City, Bush & Beach Adventure 8 Days Johannesburg - Johannesburg Days 1-3: Johannesburg This 8-day holiday takes in a fantastic `cultural' city break before experiencing the natural wonders of Kruger National Park ending with a relaxing tropical island experience in Mozambique. Start with 2 nights in Johannesburg, the cultural heartland of South Africa. This fascinating city will give you the best insight into the `New South Africa'. We highly recommend the `Essential Johannesburg' tour on page 62 for a true orientation of this pulsating city. Days 3-5: Kruger National Park After the frenetic pace of Johannesburg, enjoy 3 days at one of the fantastic and luxurious private game reserves that border the world famous Kruger National Park (see pages 68-70). Here you track the `Big 5' in open-sided safari vehicles accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable guides who will introduce you to the wonders of this magical area. The sights and smells of the bush will linger long in the memory. Kruger National Park Bazaruto Archipelago Vilanculos MOZAMBIQUE Nelspruit Johannesburg SOUTH AFRICA Days 5-7: Mozambique With flights now connecting the Kruger National Park and Mozambique this is the perfect way to end. The Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of Southern Mozambique is justifiably famous for its sparkling beaches, world-class diving and luxurious accommodation. After spending 4 days at any one of the lodges we feature (see page 90) you will leave feeling relaxed and recharged. Day 8: Mozambique - Johannesburg Fly back to Johannesburg where you can enjoy some lastminute shopping before returning home. Kenya - Safari & Beach Combination 13 Days Nairobi - Nairobi Days 1-3: Nairobi This fantastic holiday takes in the best that Kenya has to offer. With bustling Nairobi, the vast savannahs of the Masai Mara and the Great Rift Valley and the white-sand beaches of the south, Kenya will inspire you. Start in vibrant Nairobi where, if time permits, we recommend our `2 Night Essential Nairobi' to get a real taste of this historic capital city (see page 94). Days 3-5: Masai Mara The majestic Masai Mara is a highlight of any trip to Africa. It offers breathtaking views and an extraordinary density of animals including the `Big 5' and many varieties of plains game. If you arrive in July and August you may see the impressive annual migration of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle which arrive from the plains of the Serengeti. Partake in fascinating game drives and learn about this magnificent landscape. Days 5-8: Lake Nakuru With a pink sea of flamingos lapping at its shores, rich areas of grassland, euphorbia and acacia forests, and rocky cliffs supporting a myriad of animal and bird species, there's little doubt why Lake Nakuru National Park is fast becoming the Lake Nakuru KENYA Mount Kenya Nairobi Masai Mara Game Reserve TANZANIA Tsavo National Park Mt. Kilimanjaro Mombasa second most-visited park after the Masai Mara. On the game drives the wide-open spaces, sights and smells will leave you feeling you are in the real Africa. Days 8-13: Mombasa After this exhilarating safari, what better way to end your holiday than with 5 nights relaxing on the beach? Kenya's Indian Ocean shoreline is one of its greatest assets, and the unique flavour of this warm and sunny region never fails to weave a spell over its visitors (see page 95). Return to Nairobi for some last-minute shopping before heading back to the UK. Tanzania Southern Adventure by Air & Zanzibar 11 Days Dar es Salaam - Zanzibar Days 1-4: Selous Game Reserve Spend a night in Dar es Salaam and join an exciting 7-day fly-in tour of the two of the most underrated game reserves in Tanzania, Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park (see page 99). Follow this with 4 nights on the magical spice island of Zanzibar and you will surely be left with magical memories. Selous Game Reserve is immense, remote and wild and no human habitation is allowed within its boundaries, apart from within camps and lodges. Today it boasts some of Africa's finest virgin bush, unchanged through centuries and inhabited by three quarters of a million wild animals. Days 5-7: Ruaha National Park At 13,000 sq km, Ruaha National Park is not much smaller than the Serengeti, however, only a fraction has been developed for tourism. For those seeking adventure, this is the place! Its landscape is fascinating and the wilderness vast. Here, rocky outcrops, steep gorges, wooded forests and miombo woodlands all centre around the flood plains of the great sandy Ruaha River. Over the next 2 days, Lake Victoria KENYA Mt. Kilimanjaro Mt. Kilimanjaro National Park TANZANIA Ruaha National Park ZANZIBAR Dar es Salaam Selous Game Reserve enjoy the many game activities on offer, viewing and photographing the region's varied wildlife. Days 7-11: Zanzibar Island A short flight from Dar es Salaam will take you to the beautiful island of Zanzibar (see page 103). This island will seduce you with its African and Arabic influences and white sandy beaches. Make sure to visit Stone Town with its narrow streets and bustling night markets. The accommodation on offer is superb and with friendly locals and stunning scenery this is the perfect end to an exhilarating tour. 11
