Shongololo Express provides a unique and enthralling way to experience Southern Africa. The itineraries are designed to maximise your experience by travelling at night and awakening you to a new encounter each day. These rail safaris should not be confused with luxury train travel. Highlights include sightseeing in Cape Town and Durban, the picturesque Garden Route, and searching for game in Kruger National Park. The Good Hope, the train on which our featured tour operates, has its own bar, café/lounge, and dining carriage. Cuisine on board represents the traditional flavours of Africa, including Cape Dutch and Malay, and makes creative use of the best quality local ingredients. Service is efficient and friendly, and dinner is complemented by a selection of South African wines.
Accommodation
Accommodation is provided in simple but comfortable twin-bedded or single compartments, featuring ample storage space and a hand basin with running water. Bedding, towels and basic toiletries are provided, and a laundry service is available. Shared shower and toilet facilities are located in each accommodation carriage. Gold and Emerald classes feature larger more luxurious compartments with private facilities.
Daily Excursions
Each day, you awake to a new destination and a choice of daily excursions, including city tours, sightseeing and gameviewing activities. All are led by friendly, experienced guides. You are free to participate as little or as much as you wish, spending time apart from your travelling companions where your interests differ. Optional excursions are also available and are payable locally.

Life On Board
Shongololo's philosophy is that each departure should be a new adventure, packed with a variety of things to do, but that there's still time to unwind and take in the magic of Africa. Their informal approach extends to the dress code, so there's no need to pack evening gowns and dinner jackets. After dinner, enjoy a drink at the bar or in the lounge, or leave the train (transport and guides available) to explore locally where possible. Shongololo also offer journeys between Johannesburg and Victoria Falls on their Southern Cross train. For prices, dates of departure and availability, please call for details.
