South Africa
Southern hemisphere seasons are the opposite to our own, and the vast country of South Africa is dominated by regional differences in its climate. Cape Town and the Garden Route enjoy a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers (NovMar) and cool, wet winters (Jun-Aug). The area around Johannesburg has hot summers with occasional 'highveld' thunder showers, and frosty winters. Durban, Kwazulu-Natal and Mpumalanga enjoy a sub-tropical, humid climate with summer rainfall and temperatures rising to 30C (Dec & Jan), and cool, dry winters. Game viewing is at its best during May-Sep, as bush cover is low and animals congregate around the remaining waterholes. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for hiking in the Drakensburg Mountains.

Zambia
Zambia has three seasons: the cool, dry winter (May-Sep); the hot, dry season (Oct-Nov); and the hot, rainy season (Dec-Apr). Game viewing is best during the winter months, as many national parks close during the rainy season and reopen again in May.

The best time to visit Botswana is Apr-Sep, when the days are sunny and cool to warm. Within this period, game viewing is best between Jun-Aug, when animals congregate around the waterholes. By October, the days are hot and the water of the Okovango Delta filters through to the flood plains, allowing the game to disperse into huge herds. The rainy season (late Oct-Mar) broadly coincides with summer (Oct-Apr), and temperatures can rise to 40C by day and drop to 25C by night. It's a great time to see huge flocks of birds migrating south from Europe.
Namibia
Namibia's climate is typical of a semi-desert country, with hot cloudless days and cool nights. Temperatures are high from Nov-Jan, and may reach 35C. Jun-Aug remains warm, but overnight temperatures can drop below freezing. Some rain occurs between Oct-Dec, but most falls between mid Jan-Apr, when thunderstorms can be expected. Birding safaris are at their best in summer, when desert flora is also in bloom.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
It is so important to be insured when travelling. Most of the time we are fortunate enough not to have to call upon the benefits of insurance, but from time to time the need will arise, and it is wiser to be protected against the unexpected.
Our Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies are available in two levels of cover. Our GAP policy is available for travellers under 35 who need a policy to fit their budget. We offer you the freedom to select a policy to suit your individual requirements.
Mozambique
Mozambique enjoys a tropical to sub-tropical climate with two main seasons. During the wet season (Nov-Mar), temperatures average around 26C to 31C, with cooler temperatures in the uplands away from the coast. The milder, dry season (Apr-Oct) sees temperatures around 24C to 27C, and is the perfect time to dive, with calm waters and excellent visibility. Rainfall is greatest (about 56 inches) over the western hills and central area, whilst the off-shore islands are ideal holiday destinations year-round, as showers are frequent but short.
Kenya
Kenya's tropical climate is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland and very dry in the north and northeast of the country. The hottest months are usually Feb-Mar, and the coolest Jul-Aug. Rainfall is at its heaviest from Apr-Jun, and often falls in the afternoons and evenings.
Tanzania
The best time to visit the Serengeti is Jan-Mar, when grazing animals are calving and there are plenty of lion around. The vast animal migrations, which occur at the onset of the dry season and again with the first rains, are one of nature's greatest spectacles - see pages 20/21 for more details. The coastal resorts of Zanzibar enjoy a warm year-round climate tempered by sea breezes, but with heavy rains from Apr-May.

The island of Mauritius enjoys a tropical year-round climate, possibly at its best from Apr-May, but with few extremes of temperature. During winter (Jul-Sep), days are warm but the nights are cooled by sea breezes. Nov-Mar is hot and humid, and the wettest months are Dec-Apr.
The Seychelles
Due to their proximity to the equator, there are no seasonal changes and the islands bask in a warm, humid climate cooled by ocean breezes year-round. Frequent but short showers are experienced in the wet months (Dec-Jan). Wind patterns should be borne in mind when choosing your resort; from May-Sep the tradewinds blow from the southeast, whilst from Nov-Mar the islands experience the northwest monsoons.
