13 Days Nairobi to Nairobi
A safari in Africa touches something deep within all of us, for it is an experience that will never be forgotten. This itinerary highlights the best of Kenya and Tanzania, combining intriguing cultures, beautiful landscapes and excellent opportunities for spotting the Big 5. Departures: Monday, Thursday & Saturday Day 1: Nairobi Upon arrival into Nairobi, you will be met and transferred to the Safari Park Hotel. This afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the many facilities on offer here, or simply relax by the pool. Excursions can also be arranged (please see page 94 for details). Overnight: Safari Park Hotel Day 2: Nairobi Masai Mara Leaving Nairobi after breakfast, you'll travel towards Kenya's fertile highlands and head down the Rift Escarpment on a road built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. You'll pass the impressive Longonot earth satellite station as you head across the valley to Narok, travelling across acres of wheat and barley, before you reach the Masai Mara in time for lunch and to check-in for a two-night stay. Following lunch and a siesta, there is an afternoon game drive returning to the lodge as the sun sets. (BLD) Overnight: Mara Sopa Lodge Day 3: Masai Mara Today you will enjoy a morning and an afternoon game drive on the vast Mara plains. (BLD) Day 4: Masai Mara Lake Nakuru Leaving the Masai Mara after breakfast, you'll travel across the `breadbasket' of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley litter the landscape as you head north to Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Masailand. Passing through the vast plains on the floor of the Rift Valley, keep an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle as you head up the Mau Escarpment, before arriving at Lake Nakuru Lodge for lunch. The waters here are often coloured shimmering flamingo pink, from thousands of the beautiful birds lining its shores. After lunch you will take an afternoon game drive in Nakuru National Park, returning as the sun sets in time to enjoy a delicious dinner. (BLD) Overnight: Lake Nakuru Lodge Day 5: Lake Nakuru Amboseli After an early breakfast you will depart with a picnic lunch, leaving the Rift Valley behind, you continue towards Nairobi and then head south towards Amboseli National Park. Check-in for a relaxing two-night stay. In the afternoon you will embark on a game drive en-route to the Amboseli Sopa Lodge arriving in the evening. resident monkeys. (BLD) Day 7: Amboseli Lake Manyara After breakfast, you continue the journey to the Tanzania border post and then on to Arusha for lunch. After lunch, drive across the Masai Steppe to the Great Rift Valley. Here, your hotel is perched high on the rim overlooking the park below. (BLD) Overnight: Lake Manyara Serena Lodge Day 8: Lake Manyara Serengeti After breakfast, you will explore Lake Manyara National Park in a 4WD, returning to the lodge for lunch. After, depart for the Serengeti, with a stop at Olduvai Gorge for a short excursion around the museum. You will then continue into the Serengeti National Park with some game viewing en-route, checking in at your lodge for a two-night stay as the sun begins to set. (BLD) Overnight: Serengeti Sopa Lodge Day 9: Serengeti Spend an exciting day exploring the vast plains of the Serengeti, with its abundance of wildlife waiting to be discovered. (BLD) Day 10: Serengeti Ngorongoro Crater After an early breakfast, drive across the Serengeti plains and onto Ngorongoro with a picnic lunch. On arrival, immediately descend into the crater for game viewing. This is a real highlight to anyone's itinerary and is game viewing at its best. Late afternoon, ascend the crater wall and continue to your lodge which is perched on the rim of this
natural wonder. (BLD) Overnight: Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater Tarangire After breakfast, depart Ngorongoro and drive to Mto Wa Mbu for an excursion of the local village. Here, enjoy a real cultural experience, feeling the heartbeat of an authentic African village with every step you take. A leisurely stroll with a village guide will take you through local homes, farmlands, resident bars, a kindergarten and a church. After the walk, try some African fruit tasting in the local banana-leaf bar, before continuing to Tarangire National Park with a game drive en-route to your lodge. Check-in for a two-night stay. (BLD) Overnight: Tarangire Sopa Lodge Day 12: Tarangire Tarangire is recognised as one of the best parks on the northern circuit for elephant viewing during the dry season. Enjoy your last day of morning and afternoon game drives before this magical tour comes to an end. (BLD) Day 13: Tarangire - Nairobi Depart Tarangire after breakfast, arriving in Arusha in time for lunch. After lunch you continue the journey by road to Nairobi, arriving late afternoon. Depending on your onward travel arrangements you could head into Nairobi city centre for dinner, before being dropped off at the airport where your tour ends. (B)
