Mozambique
Sitting on Africa's east coast and washed by the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean, Mozambique is probably the best-kept secret on the continent. Discover wonderful stretches of unspoilt sugary white sand, crystal clear seas with world-class snorkelling and diving. The country offers an ideal place to relax and unwind after a safari in South or East Africa due to the ease of access. Once settled by the Portuguese you will find a strong colonial influence remains to this day. The Bazaruto Archipelago lies off the southern coast and is a wonderful string of jewel-like islands which offer the perfect escape from everyday life, while the Quirimbas Archipelago lies off the northern coast and is an undiscovered gem of idyllic small islands.

The emergence of Mozambique as a tropical beach destination has resulted in an extra dimension being added to holidays in South Africa and East Africa. The close proximity and regular flights means that it is possible to go from tracking lion to snorkelling amongst colourful reefs in just a couple of hours. On page 91 we have three fantastic packages to get the most out of this great combination.

Access to Mozambique
The gateway to Indigo Bay, Marlin Lodge and Dugong Lodge (see page 90) is the small town of Vilanculos. Vilanculos can be accessed incredibly easily from both Johannesburg (daily flights) and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (Tuesday and Friday, subject to season) on flights operated by Pelican Air. The gateway to Matemo Island (see page 90) is Pemba. There are two weekly flights from Johannesburg (Tuesday and Saturday returning the same days) operated by South African Airways Airlink. From Kenya there are two weekly flights out of Nairobi (Tuesday and Saturday, returning the same days). These flights need to be booked at the same time as the lodges as spaces are limited.
