Amakhala Game Reserve
Amakhala Game Reserve was founded in 1999 in a joint venture designed to reclaim the natural heritage in this historic and hospitable frontier country. The beauty of the Eastern Cape landscape enhances the recreation of a wildlife experience from generations past, as do each of the lodges, run by descendants of the original 1820 settlers. Game drives in open vehicles and guided walks will give you an upclose insight into the African bush and possible sightings of the `Big 5'. Being a short 40-minute drive from Port Elizabeth, malaria-free Amakhala is a perfect complement to a Garden Route itinerary.

Shearer's Lodge, set in the grounds of Leeuwenbosch, was originally built in 1926 and used for shearing wool. The old shed, in which close on a million sheep were shorn has been beautifully converted into four luxury ensuite bedrooms, with one beautiful honeymoon suite. All the rooms open on to a wide colonial veranda, overlooking indigenous gardens and rolling lawns.
