Day 1: Cape Town Montagu (100km) Depart Cape Town and drive along the scenic `Route 62' and stop to sample the fine wineries that line the route. Set on the edge of Klein Karoo, the scenery changes from colourful lush valleys to a semi desert with a mountainous arid landscape. The historic town of Montagu will seduce you with its picturesque colonial buildings. Standard: Mimosa Lodge (Classic Room) Superior & Deluxe: Mimosa Lodge (Garden Suite) Days 2 & 3: Montagu Oudtshoorn (230km) Set off early for Oudsthoorn and pass through the stunning scenery of the Klein Karoo: arid and majestic, there are many sightseeing options. Visit an ostrich farm, explore the famous Cango Caves or just relax and appreciate the old colonial farmsteads we have chosen. On the second day we recommend an excursion to Swartberg Pass (payable locally). Travel over Outeniqua Pass and descend into the colourful Garden Route. Choose between either Knsyna or Plettenberg Bay as your base to explore the delights of the region. Beautiful beaches, forest walks, dramatic gorges, small towns and superb food characterise the region. (B) Standard: Kynsna Log Inn (Standard Room) Superior: Laird's Lodge (Deluxe Room) Deluxe: Hunter's Country House (Garden Cottage) Day 6: Kynsna/Plettenberg Bay Port Elizabeth (285km/248km) Stop to admire some of the most beautiful parts of the Garden Route as you drive to Tsitsikamma Forest. Take a detour and drive the scenic route through Nature's Valley, which decends you into dramatic gorges and down to a wild coastline, before proceeding onto Tsitsikamma National Park. Finally, continue on to Port Elizabeth where your tour ends. The car is booked until tomorrow (6 days car hire) but must be returned no later than the time it was collected. (B)

Eastern Cape extension
If time permits, why not explore more of the beautiful Eastern Cape? An ideal end to any Garden Route itinerary is a stay at one of the many fantastic game reserves in the area (see pages 51-53), or an overnight stay in Port Elizabeth before venturing on to Grahamstown (see page 50), Frontier Country, and the battlefields of the Eastern Cape.

Here, indigenous forests have been preserved and are full of birdlife. Enjoy the nearby beaches or forest walks. (B) Standard: Far Hills Country Hotel (Standard Room) Superior: Far Hills Country Hotel (Deluxe Room) Deluxe: Fancourt Country Club (Standard Room) Day 6: George Hermanus (350km) Set off this morning for Hermanus, passing through Swellendam, founded in 1744, and on to the charming, low-key seaside resort of Hermanus to witness the awesome sight of humpback whales cavorting close to the shore (Jun-Nov). Day 7: Hermanus Cape Town (140km) Your last day can be spent travelling along the scenic coast road to Gordon's Bay. After a lunch stop, head back to Cape Town where your self-drive ends. The car is booked until tomorrow (7 days car hire) but must be returned no later than the time it was collected. (B)
