Victoria Falls
The Victoria Falls is the largest, probably the most beautiful and certainly the most majestic waterfall in the world, which is why it is one of the seven natural wonders. Here, on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia the Zambezi River plunges 108m over the lip of the Falls, 1,370m wide, into the gorge below. It creates a maelstrom of spray and sound that gives rise to the local name `Mosi Oa Tunya' the smoke that thunders! These magnificent Falls can be viewed from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, as well as from the Zambian side, featured on page 74. Both sides have their own unique features; accommodation in Zimbabwe is only a stone's throw from the bustling resort town and the Falls consistently flow year-round; whereas on the Zambian side, the Falls slow down at certain times of the year and it's possible to walk over the rocks of the Zambezi to Livingstone Island or sit in Devil's Pool, perched on the rim of the Falls. Whichever side you choose, you will certainly enjoy this adrenaline junkies' playground, also known for its whitewater rafting and bungy jumping.
