Hermanus
From June to November, South Africa's scenic coastline provides some spectacular whale watching. 37 of the world's 78 species of whale and dolphin are found in South African waters, and the small town of Hermanus has become one of the most sought after places for discerning travellers to visit from around the world. Originally a fishing village, Hermanus is South Africa's premier viewing site of the Southern Right Whale and has earned the reputation of having the world's best land-based viewing, because of the high cliffs that surround the deep waters of Walker Bay. Hermanus is located only an hours drive from Cape Town which makes it the perfect base from which to explore the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas or an ideal extension to the Garden Route.
Top Tips
* Whale watching is fantastic from the cliffs above Walker Bay, however for an even closer encounter a whale cruise from nearby Gansbaai (35km) is highly recommended. Payable locally. * For those who love walks, there is a 1.5 hr walk from Hermanus along the sea to Grotto Beach. Along the walk are many fantastic whale watching lookouts. * Instead of driving from or to Cape Town on the main N2 highway, take the scenic R44 coastal road passing through Gordon's Bay. This adds another hour to the journey, but the views are worth it. * A short drive out of Hermanus towards Gansbaai will take you to some stunning empty beaches with breathtaking views across Walker Bay. * An Ubuntu township tour (payable locally) will introduce you to another way of life for many of the locals.
