Johannesburg is Southern Africa's largest city and the starting point for many an African adventure. Johannesburg, or Joburg', is the cultural heartland of South Africa. Here, you will get to see the multifaceted Rainbow Nation' at its most proud. This city is a great introduction to South Africa and will complete any journey to this fascinating country. A short 30minute drive away, Pretoria is the starting point for fabulous railway adventures on board the Blue Train or Rovos Rail. Situated in beautiful African bushveld, the Big 5' private game reserves of Entabeni, Marataba and Madikwe are all within driving distance of Johannesburg and are a perfect complement to this fascinating region. The extraordinary Sun City resort (page 61) is also close to Joburg.

Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg On arrival at the airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel where you will have the chance to unpack and relax. In the afternoon you will be taken on an afternoon city tour of Johannesburg, where highlights include a bird's eye view from the 50th floor of the Carlton Tower, Nelson Mandela Bridge in the suburb of Newtown, and a fully-guided tour of Constitution Hill home of South Africa's new constitutional Court and the site of Johannesburg's Old Fort Prison. Overnight: Protea Hotel Balalaika Day 2: Soweto & Shopping Today, you will get a fascinating glimpse of bustling neighbourhood life in the cultural heart of South Africa. Visit two Nobel Prize winners' previous residences; the Hector Peterson Memorial; Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and various community development projects. Explanations of the Soweto uprising and the history of the ANC is all included in this humbling experience. In the afternoon, explore the many shops of Sandton, or sit back and people watch in Nelson Mandela Square.
