Undara Lava Tubes
Departures: Frequent departures Day 1: Cairns Undara Depart Cairns and travel by coach to Innisfail and through the beautiful Cairns Highlands, then into Tropical North Queensland's Outback region, known as the Gulf Savannah. On arrival at Undara Experience, have lunch and relax by the pool or enjoy a bush walk before joining your guide for a magnificent wildlife at sunset tour, followed by an evening campfire activity. Take time to appreciate the beauty of your location amid thousands of acres of pristine savannah woodlands. Tonight you will spend the night in a restored railway carriage, quite unique and not to be missed. (LD)
Day 2: Undara Cairns Awaken your tastebuds with a bush breakfast at the Ringers Camp accompanied by the chorus of morning birdsong. Afterwards join your guide for a half day tour of the Undara Lava Tubes. They were formed some 190,000 years ago when a major volcano erupted and its molten lava flowed down a dry river bed. As the top layer quickly cooled and crusted, the fiery magma below continued to flow through the tubes taking it further and further from the volcano. They are really quite extraordinary and form part of the longest lava flow from a single volcanic crater on earth. Your guides will share their extensive knowledge of this fascinating area with you. After lunch depart Undara Experience for your return journey to Cairns. (BL)

Day 1: Cairns Atherton (148kms/92miles) Collect your car in Cairns and travel north through the lush rainforest along the Kuranda Range. At the top of the range you will come to the village of Kuranda, famed for its indigenous culture and interesting markets. Travel on to Mareeba and enter the savannah landscape, then on to Atherton taking in the scenery along the way. Overnight: Rose Gum Wilderness Retreat Day 2: Atherton Undara (237km/148miles) Start the day with an early visit to Malanda Falls where you might like to take a rainforest walk followed by a refreshing dip. Travel onwards and stop off at Millaa Millaa and Zillie Falls. Reach Undara National Park to enjoy a wildlife at sunset tour with sparkling wine and canapés. Overnight: Undara Lava Lodge (Carriage ensuite) Day 3: Undara Charters Towers (370kms/230miles) The Undara Lava Tubes were formed over 190,000 years ago and is the largest lava tube system in the world, a
guided tour is recommended (additional cost). Then head off for Charters Towers which is brimming in history. Overnight: Park Motel Day 4: Charters Towers Townsville (135km/84miles) Spend some time exploring Charters Towers and finding out about its gold rush history. Afterwards take a leisurely drive to Townsville. Do pay a visit to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Wonderland if time permits. Overnight: Canobie Lodge (between Jun-Aug the Coral Lodge) Day 5: Townsville Mission Beach (315km/196miles) Head north today to Mission Beach. You may like to make a side trip along the way for a picnic lunch and there are certainly no shortage of attractive spots to choose from along the way. On arrival in Mission Beach, you will find this a charming coastal town for a two night stay. Overnight: Licuala Lodge
Day 6: Mission Beach Enjoy a full day at leisure. You may like to take a trip to Dunk Island today or try kayaking (both additional cost) or just relax. Day 7: Mission Beach Cairns (140km/87miles) Depart Mission Beach and head for Cairns. Pass Innisfail, famed for its sugar museum and Art Deco architecture. Your car is booked until tomorrow and should be dropped off at the city or airport at the same time that it was picked up on day one to avoid any additional charges.
