New South Wales
With its dramatic harbour setting, world-renowned restaurants and iconic landmarks, Sydney is reason enough to visit NSW but the state has much more to offer. Inland you'll find the ancient beauty of the Blue Mountains and the rolling vineyards of the Hunter Valley, while further north you can enjoy the secluded coves of the Central Coast, the dolphins of Port Stephens and rugged Byron Bay.
Queensland
At the gateway to the breathtaking Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday Islands offer a taste of paradise: powder-soft beaches, palm trees and turquoise waters create an idyll fit for castaways. However, Queensland's riches are not isolated on the coast North Queensland is strewn with tropical rainforest, magnificent lakes and thunderous waterfalls.
Western Australia
Covering a third of the entire country, Western Australia holds some of Australia's greatest treasures and with 12,500km of coastline, that's no surprise. Don't miss the dolphins at Monkey Mia, amazing Ningaloo Reef and pleasant Perth, the country's sunniest state capital. In the north, the Kimberley is a wilderness of deep gorges, mighty rivers and the remarkable Bungle Bungles range.
Northern Territory
The Northern Territory boasts numerous attractions for visitors. In the Red Centre, Uluru (Ayers Rock) is many visitors' highlight of a trip to Australia, while the beauty of the nearby Olgas and Kings Canyon should not be missed. The Top End, and the rich Aboriginal history found in Kakadu National Park, is uniquely Australian and the pleasant city of Darwin provides the perfect base from which to explore it.
South Australia
South Australia offers something for everyone. For gourmands, the Barossa Valley is a veritable paradise its fine vintages are the perfect accompaniment to a delicious meal in one of Adelaide's restaurants. For thrill-seekers, the Murray River offers a variety of watersports, or for something a little more sedate, Kangaroo Island is the ideal retreat.
Victoria
Cosmopolitan Melbourne is the beating heart of this lively state, while, for those in search of scenic delights, the Great Ocean Road is one of the most beautiful drives on earth and the vineyards of the Yarra Valley are unmissable. Grampians National Park is home to a variety of indigenous creatures, and pretty Phillip Island is famous for its fairy penguins.
Tasmania
Ecologically diverse Tasmania is an island of outstanding natural beauty. Compact and easily navigable, it is also an ideal self-drive destination. Explore the dense forests, majestic mountains, shimmering lakes and secluded beaches that litter the numerous national parks. Hobart, the state capital, is an excellent base.
