Australia's East Coast The Pacific Coast Self-Drive 6 Days Sydney to Brisbane from £318 Day 1: Sydney ­ Hunter Valley (150km/93miles) Collect your car and travel to the Hunter Valley, one of Australia's oldest and most important wine growing regions. Take a horse-drawn carriage picnic tour, go on a bike ride or drive yourself to one of the many wineries, before arriving at your hotel where you will stay for the next two nights. Day 3: Hunter Valley ­ Port Stephens (106km/66miles) Travel east via Kurri Kurri and Hexham onto the Pacific Highway to the Port Stephens region. The area encompasses the towns of Nelson Bay, Corlette, Salamander Bay, Soldiers Point and Shoal Bay, and offers sheltered white sandy beaches and stretches of natural bushland. Nearby Cape Byron is the most easterly point on the Australian Coast. On the way, pass through lush cattle grazing country and a number of typical Australian country towns such as Goulburn. In Canberra, visit the Parliament Buildings and the National Gallery or take a cruise on Lake Burley Griffin. Continue on through the small township of Nelligen and onto Batemans Bay, a picturesque coastal village known for its crayfish and oysters. Travel south from Batemans Bay on Highway One to Narooma, a popular fishing resort. Then pass the towns of Tilba Tilba, Cobargo, Bega and on to Merimbula. It's only a two hour drive today and your journey will take you across the Eastern suburbs of the city.
