The region is one of Australia's most famous wine producing areas and home to a collection of charming old towns and vineyards that spread across undulating hills in well-tended, precise rows. The Barossa produces brandy, dry and sweet table wines as well as fortified styles. Some of the most famous wineries are Yalumba, Orlando, Penfolds and Seppelts. Pleasant and Mannum, one of the oldest towns located on the Murray River. Travel along the Coorong National Park skirting Lake Alexandria and Lake Albert before continuing on the Southern Ports Highway to Robe, a fishing port nestled on the edge of Guichen Bay. In Robe, laze on Long Beach, indulge in the distinctive local wine, fresh seafood and regional produce or explore the diverse coast encountering Robe's seafaring past, its heritage buildings and their legends. The shorter takes you via Millicent and onto Mount Gambier, built on the slopes of the extinct volcano, before you continue to Portland and then to Port Fairy. The longer route means a very early start, travelling to Mount Gambier and passing through the towns of Hamilton, Coleraine, Casterton and onto Dunkeld. From Dunkeld a scenic drive will take you through the Grampians National Park and onto Halls Gap. Then travel via Penhurst to reach Port Fairy. Port Fairy is a quaint fishing village with many limestone and bluestone buildings dating back to the 1840's. Just past the quaint town of Port Campbell is Loch Ard Gorge with stories of shipwreck and romance. Further on are the famous stone pillars rising out of the surf known as the `Twelve Apostles'. Continue on through Cape Otway and then rejoin the coastline and the unmatched scenery which is the Great Ocean Road. The stretch of road from Apollo Bay to Lorne has been described as one of the most beautiful and breathtaking drives in the world. If you have the time make a stop at famous Bells Beach. After Torquay follow the edge of Port Phillip Bay to Geelong, the largest provincial city in Victoria, from where there is a choice of routes into Melbourne. On arrival in the city, which is known as the cultural capital of Australia, you can explore the glorious tree-lined boulevards, arts centres, bustling markets and outdoor cafés. Your hire car has been booked until tomorrow and should be dropped off at the depot no later than the time it was picked up on day one to avoid any additional charges.
