Strahan & the National Parks
With a permanent population of about 900, Strahan is a picturesque sleepy harbour town which sits on the northern edge of the vast Macquarie Harbour. It is the gateway town to the FranklinGordon Wild Rivers National Park. This is also the perfect place to start if you want to explore the beauty of Tasmania's West Coast and beyond. Much of Tasmania is protected in national parks and reserves. From the remote and uninhabited wilds of the Southwest National Park to the rugged alpine peaks and dense rainforests of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, you will be astounded at the beauty and diversity of the landscapes and habitats Tasmania's national parks protect.

West Coast Wilderness Railway
Tour WCR 4.5 hrs For 67 years, from 1896, steam locomotives hauled copper from Queenstown, through the rugged King River gorge, and down to Strahan. Then, in 1963, the railway closed and returned to nature. For over 30 years it remained closed until a tremendous feat of construction re-opened it. Today, join the restored West Coast Wilderness Railway to travel through one of the world's last pristine wilderness areas, dense rainforest, cross 40 bridges and wild rivers and climb over 200m on a fascinating 35km journey from Queenstown to Strahan. You'll also have the opportunity to visit an old gold mining settlement, explore the mine by candlelight and pan for gold in the river.
