Tasmania Self-Drives Coastal Explorer Self-Drive 6 Days Hobart to Launceston from £332 Launceston Richmond Hobart Freycinet National Park Port Arthur Day 1: Hobart Collect your car today then enjoy a day at leisure. You will come to know Hobart as an attractive city built around a beautiful harbour in the shadow of Mount Wellington. Places of interest include the Royal Botanical Gardens, Constitution Dock, Sandy Bay, Salamanca Place and Battery Point. Visit the Bark Mill and East Coast Museum before continuing on to the Freycinet Peninsula and Freycinet National Park. Then continue north via St Helens & Scottsdale on the Tasman Highway to Launceston, Tasmania's second largest city, nestled in the hilly country where the Tamar, North Esk and South Esk rivers meet. Only ten minutes from the city centre is the magnificent Cataract Gorge. Here almost vertical cliffs line the banks of the South Esk River as it enters the Tamar. Wild Tasmania Self-Drive 6 Days Hobart to Launceston from £308 Cradle Mt Launceston Strahan Hobart Port Arthur Day 1: Hobart After collecting your car, take time to explore. Enjoy the view of Mt Wellington, rising 1270 metres above sea level, forming the dominant backdrop to Hobart. Travel through Battery Point with its rows of historic cottages before reaching Salamanca Place, which boasts magnificent old sandstone warehouses. Standard: Rydges Hobart Superior: Somerset on the Pier (One Bedroom Deluxe) Day 2: Hobart ­ Strahan (298km/185miles) Travel from Hobart along the Lyell Highway across the centre of Tasmania to Strahan. The scenery on this drive is quite spectacular as you pass through the World Heritage Franklin Lower Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Stop at Queenstown, surrounded by the mountains of Mt. Lyell where the local mines produced copper, silver and gold until 1995. A visitor "must" is a cruise into the rugged South West Wilderness on one of the Gordon River Cruise vessels (own expense). Standard: Strahan Village Superior: Franklin Manor (incl. breakfast) Day 3: Strahan ­ Cradle Mountain (159km/99miles) Travel north to the small town of Zeehan, named after Abel Tasman's ship and now a classified historic town. From Zeehan continue to Rosebery and then to Cradle Mountain National Park, in the heart of Tasmania's Central Highlands. Check in at the Cradle Mountain Lodge for two nights ­ a wilderness retreat with comfortable cabins, cosy log fires, fine food and wines(breakfast included). Day 5: Cradle Mountain ­ Launceston (142km/89miles) The most direct and scenic route to Launceston is through the small town of Sheffield. Sheffield sits in the foothills of Mount Roland in one of the most attractive areas on the island. Continue on to Deloraine and finally to Launceston.
