Day 1: Hobart Collect your car and take time to explore Hobart, Australia's second oldest city. Life in the city has revolved around the waterfront, from the days of whaling to the present. Take a wander round the Sullivans Cove area, including St David's Park, Parliament House, Salamanca Place and the former mariners' village of Battery Point. Standard: Rydges Hobart Superior: Somerset on the Pier (One Bedroom Deluxe) Day 2: Hobart Port Arthur & Freycinet National Park (308km/193miles) Today, depart Hobart and head for the Tasman Peninsula. Visit the Blowhole, Devil's Kitchen and the Tasman Arch all natural features of the peninsula's rocky coastline. Continue on to Port Arthur, one of Australia's most significant historic sites, where you can spend a few hours exploring. Head north along the east coast of the island to Freycinet Peninsula, an area of great scenic beauty with rolling mountains and sparkling blue waters. Check in to Freycinet Lodge for the next two nights (breakfast included). Standard: Freycinet Lodge (Freycinet Cabin) Superior: Freycinet Lodge (Wineglass Deluxe Cabin) Day 3: Freycinet National Park Spend the day exploring this beautiful national park.
Day 4: Freycinet National Park St. Helens (106km/66miles) This morning is at leisure to further explore the Freycinet National Park. After lunch, set off along the eastern coast and en route stop at Bicheno, a delightful coastal resort with superb scenery. Travel on to St. Helens, one of the busiest fishing ports in Tasmania, well known for crayfish, flounder and scallops. Standard : Scamander Beachside Resort Superior: Tidal Waters Resort Day 5: St. Helens Launceston (169km/106miles) Depart St. Helens and pass through Scottsdale named after James Scott whose journey in 1852 led to the opening up of the area on the way to Launceston, the 'Garden City', the second largest city in Tasmania, the centre of Tasmania's north. It is nestled in the hilly country where the Tamar, North Esk and South Esk rivers meet. Only ten minutes from the city centre is the magnificent Cataract Gorge. Here almost vertical cliffs line the banks of the South Esk River as it enters the Tamar. Standard: Colonial on Elizabeth Superior: Peppers Seaport (River View) Day 6: Launceston Cradle Mountain (142km/89miles) Depart Launceston and travel via Deloraine, an attractive town with charming colonial buildings and numerous
attractions such as the Folk Museum and the Tasmanian Wildlife Park, to Cradle Mountain National Park. Check in at Cradle Mountain Lodge for the next two nights (breakfast included). Standard: Cradle Mountain Lodge (Pencil Pine Cabin) Superior: Cradle Mountain Lodge (Spa Cabin) Day 7: Cradle Mountain Day at leisure to explore Cradle Mountain National Park including the many walks and spectacular scenery. Day 8: Cradle Mountain Strahan (159km/99miles) Depart Cradle Mountain and head to the small town of Rosebery. Continue south to Zeehan, which was a booming mining town in the early 1900's. Strahan is a quiet, sleepy town, situated on Macquarie Harbour, and is the only town on Tasmania's forbidding west coast. Standard: Strahan Village Superior: Franklin Manor (incl. breakfast) Day 9: Strahan Hobart (286km/179miles) Travel from Strahan, via Queenstown, to Hobart. Queenstown, the `capital' of the west, has a very distinctive character. Mining has been the mainstay for more than a century, with displays of the past and tours of the present mine operations being essential for visitors wanting to gain an appreciation of this colourful historic town. Continue on to Hobart and your overnight accommodation.
