Day 1: Melbourne Lorne (140km/87miles or 287km/178miles via Ballarat) On leaving Melbourne, there is a choice of routes to take you to Geelong. The first option is to travel south west from Melbourne on Highway 1 directly to Geelong. The second is to travel via Ballarat. This historical town was alive in the gold rush days of the 1850s. From Ballarat travel south on the Midland Highway to Geelong, the largest provincial city in Victoria. From Geelong travel to Torquay, the start of the Great Ocean Road, and recognised as the surfing capital of Australia. After Torquay follow the coast road through Anglesea to the picturesque town of Lorne. The scenic coastline from Lorne to Apollo Bay has been described as one of the most beautiful and breathtaking drives in the world. See the amazing rock formations of the Twelve Apostles, which are
huge stone pillars reaching out of the surf, carved over time by the ways of the sea. Travelling on past Port Campbell you will see London Bridge - the broken arch! Continuing, the `Shipwreck Coast' begins, from Port Campbell and Warrnambool and on to Port Fairy, a quaint fishing village (Check-in is prior to 6pm on the Boutique option. For later arrival please call ahead). Optional Extra: For something unique enjoy a scenic flight from Port Campbell over this spectacular coastline. A 10 minute flight includes sights of the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Sentinel Rock and Thunder Cave. From £45 per person (minimum 2 passengers). The longer route will mean a very early start. Travel via Penhurst to Dunkeld, and then from Dunkeld a scenic drive will take you through
the Grampians National Park and onto Halls Gap. Highlights within the Grampians include Mt Victoria Lookout, McKenzie Falls and Reids Lookout. From here, return to Dunkeld, and then onto Mt Gambier and Robe. Travel to the towns of Tailem Bend and Murray Bridge. Travel through Mannum, Mt Pleasant and Angaston. Mannum is one of the oldest towns located on the Murray River and has an historic and lively past. The Barossa Valley is one of Australia's most famous wine producing areas. It is a warm and intimate place of charming old towns, with vineyards spreading across undulating hills in well-tended, precise rows. The Barossa produces brandy, dry and sweet table wines, and fortified styles of wine. Some of the most famous wineries of the Barossa are Yalumba, Orlando, Penfolds and Seppelts. Some wineries are still run by members of the same families that established them last century. This afternoon travel south through Gawler to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, known as the `City of Churches'. Your car hire has been booked until tomorrow and should be dropped off at the depot prior to the time it was picked up on Day one to avoid additional charges.
