Travel Tips
· Currency Most establishments in Canada accept Canadian dollar traveller's cheques in the same way as cash. You will need US dollar traveller's cheques for Alaska. £1 = approx. CA$2.11. Paper currency comes in CA$5, 10, 20, 50 & higher. Coins are known as penny (1c), nickel (5c), dime (10c), quarter (25c), loonie ($1) and twoonie ($2). · Festivals & Events Each year, Canada hosts many exciting festivals and events, including Calgary Stampede, and the Montréal Grand Prix, jazz and comedy festivals. This may mean availability is difficult during these times and some hotels and tours may incur supplements. · National Parks Many national parks charge a daily user fee, typically costing approx. $8-$10 per person. Visitor centres are normally manned by park rangers who can offer valuable advice on hiking trails, attractions, weather warnings and the local wildlife. · Taxes In Canada, most prices for goods and services are quoted without GST tax (similar to VAT in Britain). The tax will be added at the point of sale and clearly marked on the receipt. You can obtain a GST refund on goods to be taken out of the country, subject to minimum expenditures of at least $200 in total and $50 per receipt. Provincial tax (PST), which can vary, is added locally to meals, drinks and vehicle hire, and is known in Québec as TVQ. · Tipping Tips or service charges are not usually added to your bill, and in general, it is appropriate to tip up to 15%. It is standard practice to tip at the bar or table in pubs and nightclubs. · Tourist Office Visit Canada, PO Box 101, Chard, TA20 9AR. Tel: 0870 380 0070. Website: www.canada.travel
Canada and Alaska cover a vast region stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the same southern latitudes as Rome all the way up to and beyond the Arctic Circle. T emperatures and weather vary dramatically between places, so do take care to read this information carefully.
Spring
Spring weather can arrive as early as late February on the west coast of Canada. In the mountains, and elsewhere in eastern Canada, temperatures don't start warming up until April, and pleasant spring weather extends until June.
Summer
From late May to late September, the southern half of Canada enjoys warm to hot temperatures and long days of unbroken sunshine. Even in more northern latitudes of Alaska and the Yukon, summers can be surprisingly warm.
Autumn
The autumn months bring with them cooler pleasant temperatures, which makes September and October an ideal time for touring and self-drive holidays. It's also the best time of year to catch the spectacular colours of the autumn leaves.
Winter
Winters are undoubtedly harsh across much of Canada and Alaska, with snowfall beginning in late October and temperatures dipping below freezing for extended periods of time pretty much everywhere except in southern British Columbia. Under a blanket of snow, the landscapes can be at their most beautiful. Winter in Canada also offers ideal skiing conditions, with the season running from December until the end of March (eastern Canada) and extending into late May (western Canada).
TRAVEL INSURANCE
It is so important to be insured when travelling. Most of the time we are fortunate enough not to have to call upon the benefits of insurance, but from time to time the need will arise, and it is wiser to be protected against the unexpected.
Our Single Trip and Annual Multi-Trip policies are available in two levels of cover. Our GAP policy is available for travellers under 35 who need a policy to fit their budget. We offer you the freedom to select a policy to suit your individual requirements.
