Beijing Home to some of China's most famous and spectacular tourist sites, the capital city Beijing is a vast sprawling metropolis. The incredible 183 acre site of the Forbidden City is where most visitors start, spending at least half a day exploring this architectural masterpiece. Continue on to the awe-inspiring Great Wall of China at one of three locations close to Beijing before discovering the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace, both spectacular in their own right. Finally, no visit to Beijing would be complete without a traditional rickshaw ride round the old cobbled `Hutong' area of the city to view the Beijing of yesteryear. This makes a fascinating contrast with the modern skyscrapers that now fight for space in the city centre. Temple of Heaven Drum Tower Great Wall Xizhimennei To the airport Essential Beijing Day 1: Arrive Beijing Upon arrival in Beijing you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore this vast city or simply relax after your flight. Standard: Novotel Xinqiao Superior: Park Plaza Beijing Wangfujing Deluxe: The Raffles Beijing Hotel Day 2: Beijing City Tour A full day's sightseeing starts with a morning visit to the Temple of Heaven to watch the locals practicing Tai Chi and caligraphy. Continue on to the imposing Forbidden City and historical Tiananmen Square, home to China's parliament. The final stop is the glorious Summer Palace, set in vast gardens scattered with pavilions and lakes, once a playground for the imperial court. In your free time, you may wish to try some famous Peking Duck at one of Beijing's numerous restaurants. (BL) Day 3: Mutianyu Great Wall, Hutongs & Silk Alley Enjoy a full-day visit to the quieter Mutianyu section of the famous Great Wall of China. In places the wall is very steep so sensible walking shoes are recommended. In the afternoon return to Beijing for a rickshaw tour through the old quarters of the city, known as the 'Hutongs'. The narrow cobbled streets and courtyard houses afford an incredible insight into how generations of Chinese have lived for centuries. En-route back to your hotel stop at Silk Alley to try your hand at bartering. (BL) Day 4: Depart Beijing At leisure until your return transfer to the airport.
