An incredible tour through the spectacular mountain scenery of Tibet. Start in the vibrant city of Shanghai before moving on to Chengdu in the country's south-western province of Sichuan. Your journey continues on to Lhasa, deep in the Himalayan kingdom of Tibet. Spend time exploring the magnificent monasteries, palaces and temples and visit the smaller towns of Gyantze and Shigatze as you pass through some of the world's most spectacular scenery.

Departures: Daily Day 1: Arrive Shanghai Arrive in Shanghai and transfer to the Panorama Century Court Hotel for the next two nights. The rest of your day is at leisure. Accommodation: Panorama Century Court Hotel, Shanghai Day 2: Shanghai Sightseeing Today explore the high-tech and ever changing city of Shanghai. Take a walk along the fashionable Bund, see the Yu Gardens and visit an old teahouse to enjoy some traditional Shanghainese cuisine. After lunch, the rest of the afternoon is at leisure. (BL) Day 3: Shanghai - Chengdu Take an early morning transfer to the airport for your onward flight to Chengdu, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon visit the Giant Panda Breeding Research Institute, one of the world's leading research centres, and take the chance to get up close to these beautiful bears. (BL) Accommodation: Tibet Hotel, Chengdu Day 4: Chengdu - Lhasa After an early morning flight be met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a short visit to the Barkhor Pilgrim Circuit before spending the rest of the day at leisure to acclimatise to the altitude - you are now at 3700m above sea level! (BL) Accommodation: Kiychu Hotel, Lhasa Day 5: Lhasa Today, take in Tibet's Gelugpa Sect (Yellow Hat) monasteries. In the morning enjoy the visit to Drepung

Monastery, which translates to `Rice Heaps', due to its beautiful white buildings looking like heaps of rice, set against the austere mountains behind. Drepung dates back to 1416 and is one of the area's more lively monasteries. Head back to the city for lunch and in the afternoon visit the remote haven of the Pabonka Monastery. Lastly, carry onto the Sera Monastery, to experience the Great Debating Ceremony. (BL) Day 6: Lhasa & the Potala Palace This morning visit the famed former residence of the Dalai Lama, the Potala Palace; with its white and red palace buildings and numerous steps, this is a must see for any visit to Tibet. After lunch, visit the Tibetan Traditional Medicine Hospital to gain an understanding of its complex and fascinating set of medical beliefs and cures. Later in the afternoon visit the Jokhang Temple, Tibet's holiest temple, where many pilgrims gather. (BL) Day 7: Lhasa - Gyantze Head west today into the Tibetan countryside and enjoy a landscape of towering mountains, rushing rivers, quaint
local villages and the Tibetan custom of prayer flags. Drive over Kamba-la Pass, at an altitude of 4795 meters, and take in the breathtaking views over Lake Yamdrok, before carrying on to Gyantze and the simple Gyantze Hotel. Choose, if you wish before dinner, to walk through the traditional Tibetan part of town, which is close to the Gyantze Kumbun and Pelkor Chode Monastery. (BLD) Accommodation: Gyantze Hotel, Gyantze Day 8: Gyantze - Shigatze Visit the Gyantze Kumbun and Pelkor Monastery this morning, before contiuning to the Shalu Monastery and the small village that surrounds it. Then head over to Shigatze for a late lunch at one of the town's Nepalese restaurants. The afternoon will take you to the Tashilumpo Monastery, the home of the Panchen Lamas. Choose to seek out souvenirs in the market or go to the local factory to see the Tibetan carpets and rugs. Dinner is included at your hotel tonight. (BLD) Accommodation: Manasarovar Hotel, Shigatze Day 9: Shigatze - Lhasa Enjoy breakfast before returning to Lhasa along the Friendship Highway, which goes as far west as the Nepalese border. On arrival in Lhasa, the afternoon is yours to do with as you please. See the sights, shop or relax with your thoughts and memories of the last 10 days. (BL) Accommodation: Kyichu Hotel, Lhasa Day 10: Depart Lhasa Today say goodbye to Tibet as you transfer to Lhasa Airport for you onward journey. (B)
