This tour explores Yunnan, one of China's most diverse provinces, abundant with mountain scenery, lush valleys, ancient towns and traditional culture. Also known as the `Land South of the Clouds', Yunnan boasts a varied climate and population, being home to a third of China's ethnic minorities. Well known names such as `Tiger Leaping Gorge' and `Shangri-La' add to the allure of the province and this comprehensive tour ensures you see it all, from the laid-back capital of Kunming to the original ShangriLa - the inspiration for James Milton's famous novel 'Lost Horizon'.

Departures: Daily Day 1: Arrive Kunming On arrival into Kunming you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a two night stay. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Accommodation: Harbour Plaza Hotel, Kunming Day 2: Kunming sightseeing Today is spent visiting Kunming's attractions. Explore the hills above the city and visit the Bamboo Temple and the 1000 year old Yuangtong Temple. Experience the Flower and Bird Markets before stopping to relax for lunch. This afternoon travel to Lake Dian and the Western Hills to view the Dragon Gate. (BL) Day 3: Kunming - Dali Board an early morning flight to Dali to make the most of a full day's touring. Explore the Old Town, the Three Pagodas and take in a colourful Bai Village; Dali is inhabited by the local Bai Tribe who are known for their colourful costumes. (BL) Accommodation: Asia Star Hotel, Dali Day 4: Dali - Lijiang Today drive along the shoreline of Erhai Lake (on Mondays you will stop at the town of Shaping to experience the markets) to Lijiang, home to the Naxi tribe. In the afternoon visit the Black Dragon Pool, the source of water for Dayan, and the old town of Lijiang. Dayan is at an altitude of almost 8000 feet and a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 5: Lijiang This morning's sightseeing visits a traditional Naxi village at Yuhu, which has remained relatively unchanged by time, and a Tibetan lamastery (Lama temple). Spend the afternoon as you wish, maybe by enjoying the surrounds of this unique town. (B) Day 6: Lijiang - Zhongdian Set off for a full day touring in the stunning countryside north of Lijiang. Visit Shigu to see the Yangtze River in its infancy and where it changes course to run through China. At Tiger Leaping Gorge, marvel at its cliffs, measuring 4000 meters high on each side. Arrive in Shangri-La and transfer to your hotel, the Gyalthang Dzong, for the following two nights. (BL) Accommodation: Gyalthang Dzong Hotel, Zhongdian Day 7: Zhongdian Today enjoy some Tibetan culture without leaving Yunnan - Zhongdian has a large population of Tibetan people. Visit the fascinating Songzanlin Monastery and Zhongdian's old town for some lunch. This afternoon you have the option of travelling to Tanwei to see a traditional pottery making village. (BL)
Day 8: Zhongdian - Kunming After your flight back to Kunming, travel to Shilin to see the Stone Forest. A large collection of limestone pillars, which have been eroded by the elements for over 250 million years to create the surreal forms seen today. Heading back to Kunming visit a Minority Village before arriving at your hotel for the evening. (BL) Accommodation: Harbour Plaza Hotel, Kunming Day 9: Depart Kunming Spend the day at leisure before transferring to the airport for your onward journey. (B)
