Hong Kong
One hundred thousand windows gaze out into the furore of Victoria Harbour, playing host to Chinese junks and Western vessels seemingly oblivious of each other, all going about their own business in this tiny but towering region that is Hong Kong. The sophistication of the West combines with the charm of the East to give Hong Kong a vibrant atmosphere unlike any other place in the world. Visitors can navigate the modern shopping malls, nibble on authentic Dim Sum, ride the tram to Victoria Peak and stroll through Kowloon's ornate Wong Tai Sin Temple for a taste of traditional life. A visit to Hong Kong also offers opportunities to explore fascinating mainland China, the former Portuguese colony of Macau or one of the many interesting offshore islands.

· Time: GMT +8 · Flying Time from UK: Approx. 12 hours · Language: English is widely understood and spoken. Cantonese is the main Chinese dialect spoken, although the use of Mandarin is on the increase. · Currency: Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). £1 = HKD 14 approx. · Departure Tax: Included in your international ticket. · Visa Requirements: A visa is not required by UK citizens for stays of up to six months. · Getting Around: Exploring Kowloon and Hong Kong Island could not be simpler. The underground MTR (Mass Transit Railway) provides an efficient service between the city's major districts and is easy to use with good English signage. Alternatively taxis are affordable and there are frequent bus services around the island. Both a transport route and a tourist attraction, the Star Ferry traverses Victoria Harbour linking Hong Kong Island and Kowloon conveniently to each other. A number of ferry piers are dotted along the harbour operating boats between the outlying islands and nearby Macau. · Festivals, Events & Busy Times: Hong Kong enjoys both Western and Chinese festivals and holidays. More interesting festivals include Spring Lantern and the Dragon Boat Race but there are numerous others. Hong Kong is also an important regional and international commercial centre and there are certain times of year when conventions, exhibitions and trade fairs take place and hotels are very busy. Hotels are especially busy around the time of the Rugby 7s in late March. · Tourist Office: Hong Kong Tourism Board, 6 Grafton Street, London W1S 4EQ. Tel: 020 7533 7100. www.discoverhongkong.com.
