Xian More famous for the incredible Terracotta Warriors, Xian city itself is often overlooked. An excellent example of an ancient Chinese walled city, the inner city streets form a neat grid pattern with the Bell Tower at the heart. The majority of the walls still stand today and visitors can walk or hire bicycles to explore the gateways and towers which stand guard over the city. Within the walls, the evocative Muslim Quarter is dominated by the picturesque Great Mosque, one of the largest in China. Here peddlers still cycle through the narrow maze of streets selling freshly baked bread, stalls offering delicious snacks attract regular custom and souvenir shops are sandwiched between traditional butchers and local galleries.
