A Taste of the South
11 Days Chennai to Cochin. Independent Tour.

(B) Day 8: Thekkady Drive into the heart of the spice-lands to Thekkaday where an afternoon boat ride on Lake Periyar to experience the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary and view wildlife is included. (B) Overnight: Spice Village Day 9: Kumarakom Drive through the tea estates to the idyllic tropical landscape of Kerala. Transferring to a small boat you are taken on a leisurely exploration of the vast network of lagoons, lakes, rivers and canals known as the backwaters, floating past small villages until you reach your hotel. (B) Overnight: Coconut Lagoon Day 10: Cochin A short drive takes you to Cochin. An afternoon tour of Fort Kochi includes the fascinating sights of the old Jewish Synagogue [closed on Saturday], the Dutch Palace [closed on Friday] and the Chinese fishing nets all reflect the historical importance of this port city. (B) Overnight: Le Meridien Day 11: Cochin Your tour ends with a transfer to the airport, or you may decide to extend your trip with a stay at one of Kerala's beaches. Details available on request. Overnight: Trident Hilton Chennai Day 2: Chennai Kanchipuram - Covelong After a morning tour of Chennai to include a visit to the first British outpost in India, Fort St. George, drive to Kanchipuram, known as the Golden City of a Thousand Temples. Continue to your beach resort in Covelong. (B) Overnight: Fishermans Cove Day 3: Mahabalipuram - Pondicherry Today begins with a visit to Mahabalipuram an atmospheric fishing village and location of `Arjuna's Penance', the world's largest bas relief and a number of magnificent shore temples. Continue on to Pondicherry the former capital of the French colonies in India and enjoy an orientation tour of the city, passing elegant colonial mansions and tree lined boulevards. Day 4: Tanjore Todays journey to Tanjore is via Swamimalai a town famous for its bronze castings; here you will stay for two nights. Tanjore was the capital city of the Chola kingdom from the 9th to the 13th centuries and is home to over 70 temples. (B) Overnight: Parishutam Day 5: Tanjore This morning take a guided tour of the 10th century Brihadeeshwara Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Tanjore Palace and Museum. The afternoon free. (B) Day 6: Madurai Todays drive takes you through the rural scenery of south India to Madurai, for a two-night stay, visiting the Rock Fort at Trichy and the temple of Srirangam, en-route. Departures: Daily Day 1: Cochin On arrival at the airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Overnight: Le Meridien Day 2: Cochin This morning take a guided tour of the historical sights of this fascinating city which was once one of the major ports on the ancient spice route. In the evening there is the opportunity to visit a local theatre to experience a Kathakali dance performance at a local theatre (payable locally). (B) Day 3: Munnar Today your drive takes you from the tropical coast to the small hill station of Munnar, popular for its cool climate, tea plantations, and many lakes. The afternoon is spent on a tour of the hill station, enjoying the views and the crisp mountain air surrounding Munnar. (B) Overnight: Sterling Resort Day 4: Munnar Periyar This mornings drive to Periyar Wildlife Sanctury is through an
area of many spice and tea plantations. Late afternoon there is the opportunity to take a boat ride on the lake. (B) Overnight: Cardamon County Day 5: Periyar Kumarakom After a morning tour of one of the regions many spice plantations you wind your way down through the Western Ghats to the idyllic backwaters of Kerala. The final leg of todays journey to your hotel is by small boat. (B) Overnight: Coconut Lagoon Day 6: Backwaters of Kerala Sailing through the backwaters in a private converted rice barge is a fabulous way to experience the culture of Kerala. As you sail through the waterways and canals enjoying the wonderful scenery, your chef prepares fabulous Keralan cuisine, an unforgettable highlight. (BLD) Overnight: Houseboat (with air-con) Day 7: Kovalam After breakfast on your houseboat, meet your driver and head to the beachside village of Kovalam for a two-night stay. Day 8: Kovalam Today is at leisure. Kovalam has many excellent restaurants, small shops and is a great place to experience an Ayurvedic treatment. (B) Day 9: Kovalam - Trivandrum Your tour ends with a short transfer to Trivandrum airport for your onward flight. (B)
