What to See and Do
Hue
Angkor Wat
Vietnam
Liberated from years of war, occupation and isolation from the world, Vietnam has been charming travellers since reopening its doors in the early nineties. There are a host of fascinating cities and towns to explore, including the southern capital Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, with a complex history and ever changing landscape. Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and one of Asia's most captivating cities with wide boulevards and magnificent French colonial architecture. Central Vietnam offers over 2,000 kilometres of coastline facing the clear waters of the South China Sea, home to some spectacular World Heritage sites including the delightful riverside town of Hoi An. Travel further south and here you will meet the beautiful Mekong Delta region, Vietnam's main agricultural region also known as `Asia's rice bowl' here local village scenes pass you by.
Cambodia
After two decades of communist war travellers are now able to enter Cambodia and experience its unique hospitality and spectacular natural and ancient sites. Daily flights between Bangkok and Siem Reap provide easy access or alternatively travellers can pass over the border on the picturesque Mekong River from Vietnam. Cambodia is still very much an emerging travel destination rooted in centuries old civilisation and home to the Temples of Angkor, one of the true wonders of the world. Built over a period of 600 years during the dominance of the Khmer civilisation, the vast city fell in to disuse during the 15th century and was `rediscovered' in the late 19th century. Not to be missed is the fascinating city of Phnom Penh with its strong French influence and spectacular temples and museums.
Vientiane
Mekong, Vietnam
Laos
Laos is a largely undeveloped country and offers visitors an opportunity to experience a deep spiritual culture, spectacular mountain scenery, ancient temples and natural beauty that rarely exits in today's modern and progressive world. Dotted with sleepy laid back towns and villages influenced largely by the predominantly Buddhist culture and a small population. Luang Prabang and Champasak offer examples of classical Lao architecture and have since been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Vientiane on the banks of the Mekong is adorned with golden temples and riverside scenes. Images of monks collecting alms at dawn and cultural village life are an everyday occurrence to the visitor and the main charm of Laos as one of the least developed countries in South East Asia. For the visitor now is definitely the time to visit Laos whilst it is still one of Asia's best kept secrets!
Small Group Journeys
Our partner, Travel Indochina, is long established as a specialist in small group journeys throughout the Indochina region. Set widely apart from other mass touring operators, the emphasis is on a more personalised service with the maximum group number being only 15 people. Fellow travellers can expect to experience the `real' Indochina with ample opportunity to meet local people, enjoy the cuisine and experience the history and culture. Travelling in a smaller group also allows the flexibility to introduce a more personalised service and the opportunity to wander off of the tourist trails with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic western tour leader to guide. We have selected a number of small group journeys for our Far East programme; however a larger range is on offer in our dedicated Indochina brochure.
