Day 1: Arrive Tokyo Arrive today at Tokyo's Narita Airport where you will be transferred to the luxurious Imperial Hotel for a three-night stay. This evening join fellow travellers for a welcome reception and dinner. (D) Accommodation: Imperial Hotel, Tokyo Day 2: Tokyo sightseeing This morning set off on a guided excursion to discover some of Tokyo's most popular sights, including, amongst others, the Imperial Palace Plaza and Meiji Jingu Shrine. This afternoon is at leisure for you to explore Tokyo as you please. (BLD) Day 3: Tokyo Walking through Ginza, Tokyo's famous shopping district, see a variety of traditional art and craft workshops where local skills are on display. Arrive at Senso-ji Temple, popularly known as Asakusa Kannon, the most sacred and spectacular temple in Tokyo. A guided tour reveals tranquil gardens, delicate statues, a five-story pagoda and smaller temples. This afternoon is yours to enjoy as you wish. (B) Day 4: Mt. Fuji - Hakone National Park Today, travel on the renowned bullet train to the town of Hakone in Japan's rural countryside. Visit Hakone open-air museum and cruise on the tranquil waters of Lake Ashi, before riding on the Ropeway, taking you above the mountains for spectacular views of Mount Fuji (weather permitting). This evening's accommodation is the Hyatt Regency Hakone Resort & Spa where you can enjoy its panoramic views of historic Gora Valley. (BLD) Accommodation: Hyatt Regency Hakone Resort & Spa Day 5: Hakone & Japanese Alps Set off on a scenic drive to the mountain resort of Takayama, via the towering `Alps of Japan' and past rice farms and lush forests. Day 6: Takayama After breakfast join a walking tour of Takayama town, renowned for its preserved Edo-period merchants' shops, quaint streets and pure water. Visit the farmers' market, Festival Float Museum and historic Takayama Jinya. Spend the remainder of the day exploring the many antique shops, museums and sampling the local food. (B) Day 7: Shirakawa-go Journey in to the mountains to Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its villages of thatched gassho-zukuri (praying hand) farmhouses. Visit a 300-year old family home and explore the historic village of Ogimachi. This evening spend the night in a traditional Ryokan-style hotel learning more about local Japanese customs. (BLD) Accommodation: Kagaya Hotel, Wakura Onsen Day 8: Kanazawa & Kyoto Today travel to the intriguing town of Kanazawa, known for its lush gardens and narrow cobblestone streets. Here you will visit the ancient Kenroku-en Gardens, an authentic samurai house and the 300 year old Omicho Market before taking a train to Kyoto. Day 9: Kyoto sightseeing Your city tour of enchanting Kyoto begins at the Sanjusangendo Temple, home to 1001 life sized wooden Cyprus statues of Kannon-Bosatsu dating back to the 13th century. Visit a private home, learn about the art of origami and experience a traditional tea ceremony. Discover the world of geisha on a walking tour of the Gion District, Kyoto's best known geisha quarter. The rest of the day is free to continue your exploration. (BL) Day 10: Nara Visit Nijo Castle this morning, best known for its ornate interiors. Continue on to Nara, where you will savour a glimpse of old Japan on visits to ancient temples, shrines and gardens. See the Great Buddha at Todai-ji Temple in Nara Park and stroll through the gardens of Kasuga Grand Shrine before returning to Kyoto. (BL) Day 11: Kyoto Temples A morning at your leisure allows a final opportunity to explore Kyoto and wonder at the cultural gems and natural beauty, not only of this breath-taking, city but also of this stunning country. Visit one of the city's many Japanese gardens or see the geishas of the Gion District, before joining the group for a farewell reception and dinner. (BD) Day 12: Depart Kyoto Transfer to Osaka Kansai or Itami Airport for your onward journey (approximate transfer time 1.5 hours). (B)
