The Atacama Desert
The beauty of San Pedro de Atacama and the surrounding area is astounding. The oasis town lies on the edge of the enormous Atacama Salt Lake. Flamingos fly in the shadow of towering, snow-capped volcanoes. Floods, winds and minerals have given the nearby Valley of the Moon a lunar appearance and it is the place to observe spectacular sunsets while, 95km north of San Pedro, El Tatio Geysers is the highest geothermal field in the world.

4 Day Essential Atacama
Departures: Daily (sightseeing detailed below is illustrative of a typical programme, but can vary according to your interests and day of arrival) Day 1: San Pedro de Atacama & Moon Valley On arrival at Calama Airport, you will be met and transferred to the remote oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama, a journey of approximately one hour. Lunch will be served at the charming Terrantai Lodge, a small property in the centre of San Pedro de Atacama. Built using native materials and occupying a beautifully restored old house, the lodge offers an authentic desert experience combined with modern comforts. This afternoon discover the otherworldly surroundings of the Moon Valley, whose impressive geology has created an unusual landscape of diverse shapes and colours, giant dunes and beautiful salt crystals, attracting visitors and scientists alike. (LD) Overnight: Terrantai Lodge Day 2: Toconao & The Atacama Salt Lake Today, travel to the small oasis town of Toconao, its fine buildings hewn from volcanic stone. From here, travel to the enormous and shimmering expanse of the Atacama Salt Lake, and then continue to the pungent Chaxa Lagoon where flamingos and migratory birds gather. Return to your lodge for dinner. (BLD) Day 3: El Tatio Geysers Today, you will leave the hotel before dawn and travel to the Altiplano and one of the highest geothermal fields in the world. Arrive in time to witness a spectacular sunrise over the mountains, and watch in awe as steam rises from the puffing fumaroles below. (BLD) Day 4: San Pedro de Atacama Calama After breakfast, transfer back to Calama Airport for your onward flight. (B)
