5 Day Puyuhuapi & San Rafael Glacier A Secret Sound of Silence
Patagonia is a powerful, fascinating and mysterious place, come and discover the wonderful Queulat National Park and awe-inspiring San Rafael Lagoon whilst staying at the unique and sophisticated Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa. Departures: Mondays Day 1: Balmaceda Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa On arrival at Balmaceda Airport, you will be met and transferred to your vehicle to begin the scenic journey to the Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa. As you cross the Patagonian pampas en-route to the city of Coyhaique, keep an eye out for caiquenes (wild geese) and bandurrias (storks) in the wild grasses. After lunch, travel along the extraordinary Carretera Austral, the legendary road built as recently as 1983 to provide a link with the southern regions of Chile. You will pass through a scenic landscape of dense forests between mountains and cliffs, on the five-hour journey to Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa (see opposite) where you will check-in for a three-night stay. The final part of the journey is a 10-minute motorboat transfer across the Puyuhuapi Channel, as this delightfully remote lodge can only be reached from the water. (LD) Overnight: Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa Days 2 & 3: Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa Over the next two days, you cannot fail to relax amidst the Puyuhuapi Lodge's beautiful natural surroundings, which include an extensive and well-equipped spa, and natural thermal hotsprings situated at the water's edge. There's also an extensive range of facilities for you to enjoy, if you feel like discovering the local area. Explore the forest on the walking paths, visit the Queulat National Park with its hanging glacier, visit the typical local village of Puerto Puyuhuapi or enjoy an excursion by sea kayak in picturesque Dorita Bay. (BLD) Day 4: Puyuhuapi Lodge - San Rafael Lagoon Puerto Chacabuco / Coyhaique Board the Patagonia Express catamaran early this morning for your journey through the southern fjords bound for the San Rafael Lagoon. The seven-hour trip is a sheer delight: the transparency of the waters, the majesty of the Andes Mountains and possibly even an occasional encounter with a school of playful dolphins. Sailing through a number of channels you finally reach the Tempanos River, which leads to the San Rafael Lagoon, home to the awesome San Rafael Glacier. After a visit of approximately two hours, you begin your return trip, arriving into Puerto Chacabuco around 10:30pm, where you will be transferred to a simple hotel nearby. (BLD) Overnight: Local Hotel, Puerto Chacabuco or Coyhaique Day 5: Depart Balmaceda After breakfast, you will be transferred back from Puerto Chacabuco (2hrs) or Coyhaique (1hr) back to Balmaceda Airport in time for your onward flight. 3 Day Crossing of the Lakes - Chile to Argentina
Departures: Daily (except Apr 30, Dec 24 & Dec 31) Day 1: Puerto Montt - Puerto Varas On arrival into Puerto Montt Airport, you will be met and transferred to nearby Puerto Varas on the shores of Lake Llanquihue, for a two-night stay at your chosen hotel. The afternoon is at leisure to explore this charming resort with its German-influenced architecture, or enjoy the views across the lake to the towering Osorno Volcano. Standard: Hotel Bellavista Superior: Hotel and Cabañas del Lago (Superior Room) Day 2: Puerto Varas Peulla Today's journey takes you through forests and along the shores of Lake Llanquihue to Lake Todos los Santos. Embark on a two-hour cruise across the emerald lake, flanked by volcanoes, to the tiny village of Peulla, where you will spend the night at the modern, Swiss-style Natura Hotel. You will have free time to walk, canoe or go horseback riding in the idyllic surroundings. (BD) Standard & Superior: Natura Hotel Day 3: Peulla Bariloche, Argentina More outstanding scenery awaits! Travel by boat and bus for two hours to the beautiful waterfalls at Puerto Blest then cruise to Puerto Pañuelo. Cross the border into Argentina, to complete this amazing journey to the popular resort of Bariloche (see page 76) by road. (B)
Note: This tour can be taken in reverse, from Argentina to Chile, please ask for details. For those with less time, it is also possible to make the journey between Puerto Varas & Bariloche in a single day, from Sep-Apr.
