Antarctica
The great `White Continent' of Antarctica, until quite recently the domain of scientists and adventurers, is like nowhere else on our planet. Intrepid travellers are increasingly drawn to its shores to witness its awe-inspiring beauty, and to experience a sense of perfection and purity impossible to describe in mere words and photographs. In the fleeting summertime, with its long hours of daylight, this inhospitable land hosts some of the most amazing wildlife spectacles imaginable. Vast colonies of penguins, magnificent albatrosses and other sea birds arrive here to breed; seals haul themselves onto ice floes; and orca, minke and humpback whales can be seen feeding in an ocean teeming with marine life.

Antarctica Travel Tips
· Time: GMT 3 · Flying time from the UK: Approx 18hrs to Ushuaia (via Buenos Aires). · When To Go: The summer cruise season runs from Nov-Mar. November is the courting season for penguins and sea birds, and you can witness spectacular courtship rituals. Dec-Jan sees wildlife in full swing as temperatures rise and days lengthen, penguin chicks emerge and fur seals are breeding. Feb is the best month for whale sightings, whilst penguin chicks begin to fledge and sightings of fur seals are common. · What To Pack: Dress on board is informal. We recommend warm winter jackets, mid-calf or higher waterproof boots, hats and gloves - several layers is the best way to keep warm. · Environmental Impact: GAP Adventures is a member of IAATO, the global network of tour operators working together to promote responsible and sustainable travel practices. The M/S Explorer operates within all the applicable regulations and protocols. More useful information can be found on pages 88-89.
