Performances include: the sacred dances of the local Candomblé religion; the puxada de rede song traditionally sung by fishermen in honour of the goddess of the sea; the acrobatic maculele stick and sword dance; the skilful and acrobatic martial art-comedance capoeira that is thought to originate from Angola and also the samba de roda, an exuberant, spinning, swirling version of the Brazilian national dance. The seamless presentations help illustrate the multiple African traditions that underpin Bahian culture.
