Chilean Lake District Chile's Lake District is a verdant land of rivers and fertile valleys, and of charming lakeside resorts towered over by snow-capped volcanoes. Heading south into Northern Patagonia along the Carretera Austral, the landmass fragments into a multitude of fjords, and islands such as Chiloé, where traditional fishing villages coexist with ancient legends and myths. Boat cruises and spa resorts abound, and you can even cross the spine of the Andes into Argentina. Villarica 4 Day Magic of Lakes & Volcanoes Departures: Daily Day 1: Arrive Puerto Montt  Puerto Varas On arrival at Puerto Montt Airport, you will be met and transferred to your chosen hotel in the scenic lakeside town of Puerto Varas. Local architecture reflects the influence of German settlers who arrived here over 100 years ago. Stroll along the shore of Lake Llanquihue, Chile's largest lake, and admire the stunning Calbuco volcano and Osorno with its near-perfect, snow-capped cone rising to 2652m. Standard: Hotel Bellavista Superior: Hotel Cabañas del Lago (Superior Room) Day 2: Chilean Lake District (Peulla & Petrohué) This morning, travel along the shores of Lake Llanquihue past various beaches to Petrohué, located in the National Park Vicente Pérez Rosales. After an optional stop at the emerald waterfalls at Petrohué you will board a catamaran to sail across the beautiful Lake Todos los Santos to Peulla. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the Hotel Peulla and if time allows, walk to nearby waterfalls before returning to Puerto Varas.(BL) Day 3: Chilean Lake District (Frutillar) After breakfast, discover the charming summer beach resort of Frutillar situated on the shores of Lake Llanquihue and founded by German settlers around 1850. At Petrohue, embark on a two-hour cruise across the emerald lake, flanked by volcanoes, to the tiny village of Peulla, where you will spend the night at the modern, Swiss-style Natura Hotel. You will have free time to walk, canoe or go horseback riding in the idyllic surroundings.(BD) Standard & Superior: Natura Hotel Day 3: Peulla  Bariloche, Argentina More outstanding scenery awaits travelling through the Andean rainforest into Argentina. Travel by boat across Lake Frias and continue by bus through a beautiful Andean Larch forest to Puerto Blest. Embark on a catamaran cruise across Lake Nahuel Huapi and take a bus from Puerto Pañuelo to complete this amazing journey to the popular resort of Bariloche (see page 76) by road.(B) Note: This tour can be taken in reverse, from Argentina to Chile, please ask for details.
