New Zealand Car Rental - Avis
Car hire offers you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Avis operate New Zealand's largest rental fleet, with desks at all gateway airports plus all provincial airports, and at over 40 locations throughout the North and South Islands.

Most people choose to travel southwards within New Zealand. If you can travel in the opposite direction, thereby helping Avis to reposition its fleet, you can take advantage of specially reduced relocation rates see price panel for details.
Terms and Conditions
Driver Qualifications: All drivers must be 21 years old or over and have held a current overseas or international driving licence for a minimum of a year. Licences must always be carried when driving. Additional Driver: No charge. Rental Period: Daily rates are on 24-hour periods, with a minimum three-day hire on each island. Additional hours are charged at 1/3 of daily rate. After three hours, a full extra day rate will be charged. This is payable locally. One-Way Rentals: No one-way rental fee applies provided minimum hire requirement is met (see below for details on inter-island rentals). Multiple Hire: Not applicable in New Zealand. Driving Restrictions: Insurance will be void if driving on Ninety Mile Beach, or on prohibited routes such as Skippers Road and Tasman Valley Road.

Excess: In the event of an accident and/or damage to the Avis vehicle, an insurance excess of NZ$2,500 + 12.5% GST applies to car group A-E & NZ$3,000 + 12.5% GST to car groups F, P V & W. A credit card imprint is , taken for all extra charges, including the excess. This is fully refundable should no damage occur. Excess Reduction Fee: You may reduce the excess amount to NZ$225, plus 12.5% GST, by paying an Excess Reduction Fee. This costs NZ$24 (car groups A-E) or NZ$27 (car groups F, P V & W) per day + 12.5% GST. ,
Insurance Package: The Excess Reduction Fee can be incorporated into an enhanced package which also includes Personal Accident Insurance and Personal Effects & Baggage Insurance. This costs NZ$28 (car groups A-E) or NZ$30 (car groups F P V & W) per day plus 12.5% GST. ,, Airport/Wharf Collection Charge: Vehicles collected or dropped off from airport depots, Picton or Wellington wharf will incur a one-off charge of NZ$28 plus 12.5% GST per hire payable locally. Petrol Bond: Not included in your hire. Country Locations: A charge of NZ$50 plus 12.5% GST is payable if renting from Greymouth, Hokitika, Westport, Whangarei and Gisborne.
Inter-Island Rentals
The Interislander ferry between Picton and Wellington links New Zealand's North and South Islands. For full details and prices please see page 54. Avis rental vehicles cannot be taken onto the ferry, and one-way rentals between the two islands are not permitted. Avis provides a changeover service at the two ferry ports this will be calculated as one hire if the next vehicle is picked up within five hours. Five days notice is required for this service, and the minimum hire periods apply on each island.
