Departures: Daily from Christchurch Travel on The TranzCoastal train from quaint Christchurch across the rolling farmland of the North Canterbury plains through to the rugged Kaikoura Ranges. Transfer on arrival to the White Morph Motor Inn or similar, then enjoy a truly fantastic whale-watching adventure. Viewing the magnificent whales at close range is the highlight, yet on each trip you will encounter a wide range of sealife including fur seals where you can observe them in their natural habitat. In addition you may see the world's rarest tiny Hector dolphin, while the more common Dusky dolphin can be seen during the summer months. As well as marine mammals, Kaikoura has a variety of offshore birds, including royal and wandering albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels. After check out on day two, the morning is at leisure, then transfer back to the railway station for your afternoon train back to Christchurch. Kaikoura
Departures: Daily from Christchurch. Enjoy the award-winning TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth. From the train you will see the huge and fertile patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains; wind your way over five massive viaducts, through 16 tunnels and spectacular gorges, into the stunning Waimakariri River valley and travel past the beautiful Lake Brunner to the west coast town of Greymouth. Be amazed at the contrast between the eastern and western sides of the Southern Alps as you pass under mighty mountains. On arrival you will be transferred to the Kingsgate Hotel or similar. This afternoon enjoy a guided coach tour to the spectacular Pancake Rocks and Punakaiki blowholes. After check-out on day two, you will be taken on a short tour to Shantytown try your hand at gold panning or ride a steam train, then transfer back to Greymouth for your return journey to Christchurch.
