Glacier Boat Cruise
Tour GBC 3 hrs These tours depart daily between October and May from Mount Cook. Very few glaciers terminate into lakes and even fewer are readily accessible to travellers. Depart from Mount Cook National Park and travel by minibus for 15 minutes, followed by an easy 30-minute walk to the shores of Lake Tasman. Here you will join the boat for your adventure, exploring the huge ice-face of New Zealand's largest glacier, Tasman Glacier. Watch and listen to the ice melting before your eyes in this tranquil glacial lake. Stop to touch, taste and hold 500-year-old ice. Knowledgeable guides will help you understand how the glacier makes its way on the long journey down the valley, eventually arriving at Lake Tasman in the form of a beautiful iceberg. Day 1: Arrive Christchurch Upon arrival, transfer to your chosen hotel for your overnight stay. The rest of the day is yours for exploring. With its tree-lined avenues, bustling café scene and very own Avon river, Christchurch has a distinctive English charm. Perhaps visit the Antarctic Centre, take a punt on the river or ride the skyline gondola for views of the city and the stunning Southern Alps. Please see page 57 for details of your touring options. Day 2: Christchurch Mount Cook Queenstown Today, travel south across the Canterbury Plains, through the Mackenzie Country via Lake Tekapo to Mount Cook National Park. A marvellous way to experience New Zealand's highest peak is on an optional scenic flight please ask for details and prices. Continue to Queenstown, New Zealand's adventure capital. Day 3: Milford Sound Following an early departure you'll follow the shores of stunning Lake Wakatipu as you head towards Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park. From the Homer Tunnel, you'll emerge into the Cleddau Valley and stunning Milford Sound. You'll join a Milford Sound Red Boat Cruise and explore the wonder of this majestic fiord. Later you'll retrace your steps and return to Queenstown. Day 4: Queenstown Beautiful Queenstown, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and under the shadow of the appropriately-named Remarkables mountain range, has many activities for you to enjoy. Perhaps stroll around stunning Lake Wakatipu, take a jet boat along the Shotover River or enjoy a cruise across the lake to Walter Peak. Day 5: Queenstown Franz Josef Travel north today, enjoying the rugged west coast scenery through the Haast Pass to Franz Josef. Check in at your chosen hotel for your two-night stay. Day 7: Franz Josef TranzAlpine Christchurch Today you'll board the TranzAlpine train and take a journey famous for its spectacular mountain scenery, traversing the Southern Alps.
