SPECIAL DEPARTURE
Rocky Mountaineer Kicking Horse Route
17 days from only £1999
This fabulous railroad option can be taken as a special departure in conjunction with our Across Canada holiday. The tour follows the main itinerary until Day 7, when you will transfer to Banff for an additional day, with an included visit to Lake Louise, described by many as the most beautiful place in Canada. You will board the Rocky Mountaineer train at Banff station the next day to begin your journey along the world-famous Kicking Horse Route to Kamloops. The route takes you through the glorious Banff National Park, passing the picturesque Lake Louise before beginning the steepest part of the climb through the Rockies. On crossing the Continental Divide we leave Alberta and enter British Columbia, descending past Lake Wapata and journey through the architectural masterpiece of spiral tunnels cut into two mountains, before heading down to Kicking Horse Pass. Continue past the town of Golden and through Roger's Pass, with its tunnels, snowsheds and glistening glaciers, then on to Craigellachie, where the last spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven in 1885. At Silverdale you pass the spot where Billy Miner and `Shorty' Dunn carried out Canada's first train hold-up in 1904, then continue along the fjord-like shores of Shuswap Lake and through the vast ranchlands along the South Thompson River. After an overnight stay in Kamloops, re-board the train and travel along the Thompson River and through the rugged canyons of the Fraser River. We then journey along the fjord of Burrard Inlet to Vancouver, where you will rejoin the main itinerary (Day 12) and continue to Victoria. Holiday Ref: UACR
