The Deep South is like nowhere else in the USA. Here you can experience the true meaning of `Southern Hospitality' as you visit the famous landmarks, old and new, which lend such grace, charm and distinction to these lush states.
The South is a land of cotton and tobacco, antebellum mansions, Civil War battlefields, graceful cities and, of course, music, from Dixieland jazz and blues to rock and roll and country music. Our carefully planned itinerary guides you through four historic states. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Atlanta in Georgia. Transfer on arrival to your hotel for an overnight stay. DAY 2 - Known as the `Peachtree State', Georgia also produces peanuts, pecans and cotton. It is the most progressive state in Dixie, yet still retains the charm of the old south. At its heart is Atlanta, home to Coca-Cola and CNN, and the venue for the 1996 Olympic Games. Atlanta began as a sleepy railroad terminus in 1837 but rapidly became a sophisticated city before its destruction in the Civil War, immortalised in the film `Gone With The Wind'. Atlanta has risen again, and is now one of America's foremost cities. Our holiday includes a morning sightseeing tour. You will see famous Peachtree Street, the Georgia State Capitol, the main downtown area and Underground Atlanta, the `city beneath the streets' which was built early in Atlanta's history and is now a spirited urban marketplace. Atlanta is also the birthplace of Dr Martin Luther King, and a visit will be made to his house and the church where he preached. Departure for a scenic drive through the forests of northern Georgia to Chattanooga, walled in on three sides by mountains and situated just across the state border in Tennessee. Tennessee is a land of cotton and tobacco, music and whiskey. You will stay for two nights in Chattanooga. DAY 3 - A sightseeing tour of Chattanooga is included, and features the Ruby Falls, Rock City Garden and the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, the steepest in the world. The mountain towers 2,000ft above Chattanooga, and on a clear day you can see five states. DAY 4 - Depart Chattanooga and drive to the tiny town of Lynchburg (population 361) to visit the Jack Daniel's Whiskey distillery, for a guided tour. Continue to Nashville for a three night stay. DAYS 5 & 6 - Nashville is both the capital of Tennessee and the country music capital of the world. This is the home of the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame. Our tour includes a morning sightseeing tour of Nashville. You will visit Fort Nashborough, the original site of the city's pioneer settlement, the Parthenon replica, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Studio B, where so many of America's greatest music stars have made recordings. This evening join an optional visit to the Grand Ole Opry. DAY 7 - Late morning departure for the easy drive from Nashville to Memphis, with a stop at the Casey Jones Village. Two nights' accommodation has been arranged in Memphis. DAY 8 - Memphis stands proudly on the bluffs of the mighty Mississippi. It is an old town with a new face, both `old south' and modern metropolis. The city's strongest association is with the legendary Elvis Presley, whose home, Graceland, has become a mecca for thousands of visitors every year. A full day sightseeing tour of Memphis is included, featuring the famous Riverfront, Beale Street, (the birthplace of the blues), Sun Studios and, of course, Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. In the evening you can enjoy a special, optional visit to a Blues Club on Beale Street.
