ADD-ON
Charleston & Savannah
3 nights from only £399
See more of Georgia and visit charming South Carolina too with this special pre-tour add-on to Charleston and Savannah. Charleston is home to a fine natural harbour and charming Georgian homes. Beautiful Savannah epitomises the elegance and gracious living of the southern states in the 18th and 19th centuries. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Charleston for a two night stay. DAY 2 - Charleston boasts narrow cobbled streets, pavement cafés and bistros and restaurants. We have included a sightseeing tour of the old town, including the waterfront, the old slave market and the exchange building. In the afternoon, a harbour cruise is included which will take you to Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired. There will also be an opportunity to view the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, now permanently berthed at Patriots Point. DAY 3 - Drive across the state border into Georgia and on to Savannah for an overnight stay. This beautiful city epitomises the elegant living of the southern states in the 18th and 19th centuries. We include a tour by horse and carriage of Savannah's beautiful parks and squares, the old town and the picturesque riverfront. DAY 4 - Drive to Atlanta to join up with Day 1 of the main Deep South itinerary. YOUR HOTELS You will stay in hotels such as Days Inn in Charleston and the Inn at Ellis Square in Savannah. Hotel amenities include bar and restaurant. All rooms have private facilities, air-conditioning, TV and telephone. There is a restaurant and/or bar in most locations and often extra facilities, such as swimming pool and shop.
DAY 9 - Drive into the state of Mississippi for a two night stay in Vicksburg. The town was the site of several decisive battles during the American Civil War, being besieged and bombarded for 47 days in 1862 by General Grant. Accommodation is at the Battlefield Inn or similar. The state of Mississippi, named after the `Ole Man River' which forms its western border, epitomises the Deep South, with beautiful forests, fine ante-bellum mansions, and an easy-going approach to life, typified by that slow, seductive drawl. DAY 10 - Included sightseeing tour of Vicksburg. The town is nearly surrounded by the National Military Park, which is as much part of Vicksburg as the historic streets and houses in the centre. DAY 11 - Drive to the charming port of Natchez, straddling the Mississippi River. This aristocratic town prospered enormously during the boom days of the cotton industry. Today vast plantations and over 500 magnificent mansions reflect the splendour of that era. A tour of this town and an elegant ante-bellum home will be made before continuing into Louisiana and on to New Orleans, the South's most beautiful and exciting city. Three nights' accommodation has been arranged. Louisiana has a distinct historic and ethnic atmosphere. The land is semi-tropical, beautifully unusual, full of legend and tradition; a land of bayous with cypress and live oak overhung with Spanish moss. The French Arcadians (`Cajuns') settled here after their expulsion by the British from Nova Scotia, and French influences remain all-pervasive, especially in wonderful New Orleans, the home of Mardi Gras and Dixieland Jazz. DAY 12 - We've included a morning sightseeing tour of the city. You will see Jackson Square, the downtown district, Lake Pontchartrain, the Superdome and of course the famous French Quarter. Its narrow streets, wrought iron balconies, seafood restaurants, and flower-bedecked verandas ring to the sound of authentic jazz from the bars and cafés of fabled Bourbon Street. Savour the taste of French Creole and Cajun cuisine amidst the non-stop
activity of street musicians, mimes, pavement artists and the legendary night clubs. Plenty of optional excursions will also be available. You can enjoy a trip on an authentic sternwheeler and tour New Orleans by night. You may also want to return to wander through the narrow streets of the French Quarter, and enjoy the sights and sounds of this historic city, with its unique blend of Spanish, French and American flavours. DAY 13 - Free in New Orleans to explore at leisure. DAY 14 - Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK. DAY 15 - Arrival in the UK.
