Route 66 is a legendary part of American folklore. It symbolises the American Dream the ideals of adventure, the open road, freedom and self-enhancement. Immortalised in song, the route winds through some of America's finest scenery and most fascinating places from Chicago to L.A. ("more than 2,000 miles all the way"). What's more, we make a slight diversion to visit the fabulous Grand Canyon. So get your holiday kicks on Route 66!
YOUR ITINERARY AY 1 - Depart on your scheduled flight to Chicago. On arrival transfer to your hotel for a two night stay. DAY 2 - Once the rail centre of the nation, and notorious for gangsters such as Al Capone, Chicago is a powerful city, with the world's busiest airport and a cosmopolitan ambience. Although a city of the prairie, Chicago shows its best face towards Lake Michigan, where a green fringe of parks forms an arc from Evanston to the Indiana border. A half day city sightseeing tour, featuring the famous `Loop', is included today. DAY 3 - Morning departure at the start of Route 66 for the drive south-west. The actual roads have, of course, been modernised, but the spirit of the route remains, especially in small towns where 24 hour diners and hot apple pie are still a way of life. A stop will be made in the state capital of Illinois, Springfield, home of President Lincoln. Continue into the state of Missouri and the city of St. Louis for a two night stay. DAY 4 - St. Louis is the largest city in Missouri and is home to America's busiest inland port, located on the mighty River Mississippi. This morning there will be an included tour. You will see the 630ft Gateway Arch, old Union Station and the Budweiser brewery. This afternoon there will be an included visit to historic St. Charles, the oldest city on the River Missouri. This evening you can join an optional dinner cruise on the Mississippi or visit one of the many jazz and blues clubs. DAY 5 - Morning departure for another Springfield, the gateway to the Ozark Mountains and officially recognised as the birthplace of Route 66. It was here on April 30, 1926 that officials first proposed the name of this now famous highway, providing a continuous and romantic link between Lake Michigan and the Pacific Ocean. It was also in Springfield that the nation's first recorded shoot-out occurred between `Wild Bill' Hickok and David Tutt. A city tour is included prior to transferring to your hotel for an overnight stay. Evening optional excursion to Branson, entertainment capital of the USA.
