OAHU Oahu is perhaps the most famous island because it contains Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, and fabulous Waikiki, an international resort with hotels, shops, restaurants and 24 hour nightlife. It is nevertheless a remarkably compact resort, and easily escaped if you fancy a quiet relaxing time in the Hawaiian sunshine. The vast Kapiolani Park is nearby, and Waikiki Beach itself stretches a long way towards fabled Diamond Head. The beach was once the exclusive playground of Hawaiian chiefs and royalty and it was here that they honed their skills in the native Hawaiian sport of surfing in the gentle waves that comb the shore. From a royal playground, Waikiki has developed into a fun-packed resort with a glamorous atmosphere. Oahu has much to offer, including its spectacular, rugged and unspoilt Pacific coastline, the cool green Koolau Mountains, Pearl Harbor, the Polynesian Cultural Centre and, naturally, the best water sports facilities in the world. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - This will be Day 11 of your America's Golden West tour (see pages 8-9) Day 14 of your Western Explorer tour (see pages 10-11), or Day 7 of your Las Vegas with San Francisco tour (see page 14). You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport for a flight to Honolulu, situated on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Transfer on arrival to your hotel for a six night stay. DAYS 2 TO 6 - Free to enjoy the delights of Waikiki. As an introduction to your island paradise for the next five days, we have included ADD-ON Hawaii Add-on 6 nights from a half day sightseeing tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor, where you can view the memorial to the battleship USS Arizona. There is so much to see and do, apart from simply lazing on the golden sands and bathing in the warm waters. You can take a scenic tour of the island visiting Diamond Head, Waimea Falls Park, and the famous surfing beaches in the north; enjoy a display of native village life at the Polynesian Cultural Centre; and visit Sea Life Park.
