The lovely lakeside resort of Zell am See nestles amidst the stunning scenery of the Austrian Alps. Flower-filled meadows adorn the slopes of the mountains, while snow and ice coat the tallest peaks, even in summer. You'll find lots to entertain you. Stroll round the medieval centre, which is largely pedestrianised, browse through the shops, then taste the famous Kaffee und Kuchen as you relax and watch the world go by in one of the welcoming cafés, restaurants and bars. If you are feeling a little more energetic there are plenty of watersports to join in, wonderful walking routes to follow around the lake and up into the mountains and the higher paths are just a cable car ride away. YOUR ITINERARY DAY 1 - Local departure and a mid-morning crossing to Calais. Continue to northern France for an overnight stay on a bed and breakfast basis. DAY 2 - Travel through Germany and into Austria for an early evening arrival at your hotel in Zell am See for a seven night stay. Welcome drink and dinner this evening. DAYS 3 TO 8 - Free to relax and enjoy our excursion programme. The following excursions are included: Grossglockner - A superb three quarter day scenic drive through the Hohe Tauern National Park along the Grossglockner High Alpine road to view Austria's highest mountain reaching an altitude of 12,470ft. You'll enjoy some superb photo opportunities and feel on top of the world (operates subject to weather). Kaprun - A full day's trip to the nearby picturesque village of Kaprun is a must'. You can take a cable car ride (extra cost) up the Kitzsteinhorn for spectacular views of the Grossglockner and the surrounding peaks in the Hohe Tauern and visit the Kaprun Alpine Reservoir, high up in the Hohe Tauern mountains (may not be possible during early and late season) The following excursions are optional: Berchtesgaden - A fascinating full day trip to Hitler's mountain top retreat, known as the Eagles' Nest. Take the Post Bus up the mountain to where the original brass-walled lift will whisk you to the top for spectacular views. Then return
via the beautiful Konigssee Lake, one of the most scenic spots in the Alps. Krimml Waterfalls - A three-quarter day scenic tour through the Saalach Valley to the falls, which are among the highest in Europe, with a drop of some 1250 ft, and form one of the most impressive sights in Austria. Werfen & the Ice Caves - A full day optional excursion to Werfen and the magnificent ice caves, the Eisriesenwelt. We ascend to the caves on foot and by cable-car (approx. 50 minutes walking) where you'll discover the spectacular ice-sculptures, stalactites and stalagmites.
