Monet's Garden Versailles Gardens Château Chenonceau and Amboise
They say the history of France is written in her gardens. From the grandeur of Versailles to Monet's delightful garden with its famous lily pond and the beautiful formal gardens at Chenonceau, the variety is incredible. On top of all this we also take in the delights of Rouen, Orléans and the Loire Valley.
Day 1 UK/Rouen Local departure and an afternoon crossing to Calais. We then travel on to our first base in Rouen for a two night stay. Rouen, the old Norman capital and home to William the Conqueror, is situated on the Seine and is famous for its magnificent cathedral and architecture. Day 2 Giverny Join us on our included full day excursion to Monet's beautiful gardens at Giverny, including entrance to his beautiful house. The impressionist artist Claude Monet planted and painted here and you'll recognise many features from his most famous paintings, including his lily pond and Japanese bridge hung with wisteria. This is a charming experience and the sights and smells will give you a unique insight into the life of the famous painter as he struggled with his failing sight and in the process became the first impressionist. Meals: B Day 3 orléans We travel onward to Orléans, home to the peasant girl who later became known as Joan of Arc, overthrowing the English forces to restore Charles VII to the French throne. We take in the magnificent gardens of Versailles en route where you can imagine the stark contrast between the lives of Marie Antoinette and the peasants at the time of the French Revolution. Today Orléans is a World Heritage site and renowned for the beautiful Gothic SainteCroix Cathedral. Meals: B Day 4 Chenonceau and Amboise A full day excursion through the beautiful Loire Valley to the stunning Château Chenonceau. Perhaps the most majestic and stately of the Loire Chateaux, this architectural jewel built in Renaissance style is situated on the site of a fortified mill which bridges the River Cher. The lovely formal gardens feature elevated terraces providing beautiful views over the chateau itself. We also visit the delightful town of Amboise, before returning to our hotel. Meals: B Day 5 orléans/UK We depart for Calais and a late afternoon crossing to the UK. Return to your original departure point in the evening. Meals: B
